Back in 2001 Francis Fukuyama, the American philosopher and political economist, signed a letter to the then US President George W Bush, calling for American forces to be "used to provide a safe zone in Iraq" from which the opposition to Saddam Hussein could operate.

He tells HARDtalk's Sarah Montague that the Bush administration later failed to plan for the consequences of military intervention in Iraq and that, in retrospect, he wouldn't have signed such a letter.

The man famous for writing the End of History also answers the question asked in his latest book on why some countries have ended up as stable democracies, like Denmark, and others have not.
