Iran's first submarine to enter international waters, Yunes, is heading back home from a 75-day mission to the Red Sea. The submarine has helped enhance security in waters critical for merchant ships. The Iranian Navy made it a policy to operate in the high seas and beyond its coastal waters since 2008 and now with the Yunes submarine it's moved forward to next level.

Commander of Iran's Navy Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari says: “The 14th naval unit which was dispatched to the Gulf of Aden was accompanied by the Yunes SUBMARINE. The unit was tasked with patrolling and providing security for Iran's cargo ships and oil tankers against Somali pirates. It is on the 67th day of its mission now. It is very important that we have taken our naval presence to next level and with our subsurface vessel added to the fleet we are efficiently safeguarding our national interests”.

Analysts consider this a leap forward as Iran has been able to gain the technological know-how despite harsh sanctions imposed by western countries.

Political Analyst Nader Mokhtari explains that the overhaul of Yunes demonstrates Iran's high technological capacities.
On its first mission, the submarine has also been collecting data including information about on the sea bed in the high seas and identifying other warships.
