Azeri Activists Detained In Iran For Environmental Protests

BAKU -- Iran's Intelligence Ministry has detained over 30 ethnic Azeris in recent days over environmental protests, RFE/RL's Azerbaijani Service reports.

The activists in Tabriz were protesting the Iranian government's failure to take measures to save Lake Urmia, a salt lake situated between Iran's East Azerbaijan and West Azerbaijan provinces that is drying up.

Members of the activists' families told RFE/RL that over 30 people were detained on August 24 during an iftar evening meal when Muslims observing Ramadan break their fast.

On August 25, several more activists were detained before and after a soccer match in Tabriz between the Azerbaijani Trakhtorsazi team and local team Shahrdari Tabriz. Thousands of Azerbaijani fans chanted "Lake Urmia is dying, the Majlis orders its execution" during the match.

Several more activists were reportedly detained in Ardabil and other cities.

Iran's parliament recently voted against allocating funds to channel water from the Araz River to raise the level of the lake. Instead, they proposed relocating Azerbaijanis living around Lake Urmia.

Turan Kheyri, the wife of detained activist Mustafa Avazpur, told RFE/RL that he has been detained twice before for demanding the protection of Azeri rights. She says Avazpur was released from jail last year.

Lake Urumieh dries up protesters arrested

Any other reason to hesitate against waging war on the IR? For the sake of Lake Urumieh, for the thousands of trees cutdown in Kurdistan, for the  Caspian, for the Alborz mountains please support military action.

Military Action can save Lake Urumieh.

Vaghan honar kardi.

Did you know you can quite literally train a chimpanzee monkey to copy and paste over a desktop PC?

Do you like to collect quotes and carry out  parvandesazi of all enemies of the Islamic Republic? You are acting like the agents for the Islamic Republic who stand outside embassies and photograph demonstators but people are not intimidated Boos Boos.

Do you have anything to refute the arguments I raised below. I am aware of the quotes I have written and my support for military action is well known amongst Iranian.com readers.

Instead of reading back quotes why don't you explain why there is money to build a floating mosque on water, send pilgrims to Karballah and Najaf, send $20 million to drought stricken Somalia, send $300 to war-struck South Lebanon but the Majlis will not approve of replenishing Lake Urumieh.

Can you give answers or do you want to copy and paste all day?

It seems suporters of the Islamic Republic have an infinite arsenal of excuses after excuses for this evil terrorist regime occupying Iran.
The protesters around Lake Urumieh were shouting that the Majlis is doing nithing to lessen the deterioration of Lake Urumieh they were not shouting death to Iran! Free Tabriz!
The fact that you do not care about Lake Urumieh does not mean that millions of other Iranians don't and if anyone is fuelling pro-separatist sentiment on the ground it is the IR who has money to spend on aid in Simalia, South Lebanon and restoring mosques in Karballah and Najaf and funding pilgrimages for dead Arab saints but it seems the purse is empty when it comes to edpenditure on precious lakes and heritage sites which my earlier post showed.
If you think we are going to let Lake Urumieh die like your IR gave away the Caspian then you have another think coming.
AND YES LAKE URUMIEH IS WORTH DESTROYING THE IR FOR. NOT ONE DROP OF BLOOD OF A BASIJ OR REVOLUTIONARY GUARD IS WORTH ONE DROP OF WATER IN LAKE URUMIEH.

FOR THE SAKE OF LAKE URUMIEH PLEASE SUPPORT MILITARY ACTION!

Neo-cons hate Urumiyeh and Iran

by BaronAvak on

Everyone agrees that Lake Urumiyeh should flourish.  However, thinking practically, it does not mean Iranians should allow pan-Turk seperatists and their anti-Iranian neo-con promoters on the site like Simorgh555 to use some lake as a pretext upon which to divide and destroy and bomb Iran.

I agree that Lake Urumieh is a serious environemntal issue but anaylsis of its root causes will indicate it is man made. Droughts, poor irrigation, building of dams and construction work are all contribuiting to the demise of the Lake.

Even if this was a natural disaster the Islamic Republic seems pretty much indifferent to the lake. The protesters were not shouting 'Death to Iran' but were chating "Lake Urmia is dying, the Majlis orders its execution". The protesters were angry about the indifference of the Islamic Republic parliament to help counter the deterioration of the lake as each and every one of Iranians are doing so.

The Islamic Republic has a history of indifference to Iranian heritage and failure to conserve our history as these press reports, some from the IR itself, will indicate:

Lichens, weeds threatening Sassanid bas-reliefs:

 //iranian.com/main/news/2011/05/22/lichens-weeds-threatening-sassanid-bas-reliefs

Persepolis will ceas to exist in 10 years

 //iranian.com/main/news/2011/05/22/persepolis-will-cease-exist-less-decade

Or the cutting down of trees in Sanandaj:

 //mail.iranian.com/main/2011/jan/tree-controversy-sanandaj

Are these activists protesting against the deforestation of Iranian also Pan Turkists and Kurdish Terrorists?

Is every protest against the IR propelled and instigated by Zionists and Americans? Is the legitimate anger against the inaction and incompetent policies of the IR to control and contain enviromental disasters which damage the home and livelihood of thousands of Iranians living around Urumieh all part of a covert plan to cause an ethnic upheaval in Iran? Both of you should be ashamed of yourselves. If you were really patriotic you would stand by in solidarity with the people of Urumieh and not condemn the protesters.

I do not know whether the men arrested in the Lake Urumieh were supporters of a Pan-Turkist or Azari Separatist movement but when those living in the area affected by this enviromental catastrophe see that the Majlis does not give a flying hoot about spending any money for its protection the Islamic Republic is to blame for any anti-Iranian sentiment. When a senior IR official several years ago called Azari Turks 'cockroaches who feed on faeces' how do you expect an Azari Turk to behave?

 Don't worry about Israel and Pan Turkists thretening the existence of Iran, the Islamic Republic is doing exactly that without their help.

With the neglect of Persepolis, Naqse Rostam  and the removal of the statues of Iranian hero Arash Kamangir

 //features.kodoom.com/en/iran-culture/statutes-of-iranian-hero-arash-kamangir-disappeared-because-they-insulted/v/3076/

With the population of Iran rising to 70 million plus, mass unemoployment, the destruction of Iranian national heritage in Pasargad and the Fars province, the intolerable pollution, the destruction of landscape of the Alborz mountains, the deforestation and destruction of lakes and rivers, the depletion of natural resources by the Islamic Republic makes the job of Israel destroying Iran much more easier.

They are separatists

by BaronAvak on

If you think this is really about the amount of water in Lake Urumiyeh, I've got a bridge in Brooklyn I'd love to sell you.

They Lake Urumiyeh issue is just a laughable pretext used by a minority of pan-Turk separatists to promote separatism and anti-Iranianism.   Next thing you know, they'll be protesting the whole in the Ozone layer and saying pan-Turk ideology will solve it.

Military Action

by BoosBoos on

The second any foreign force attempts to invade Iran, 70 million of Iranians will band together to fight the invasion and those who don't will be traitors to the nation and treated as such by the people of iran before the government even has a chance to get their hands on them.

Lake Urmieh is an environmental issue - and a serious one.  However, I personally know that the U.S. and Israel have sponsored panturkist groups (Bozkurt being one) to use those events to try to sow discord and create a sectarian conflict (civil war) in Iran.  This is a part of the problem.

Here is one the panturkist separatist sites using Urmieh as a pretext to make Northern Iran into a new country separate from the rest of Iran.
