After the president's speech to the UN, our senior analyst wonders why US leaders continue to pander to a foreign power
Obama is the "the first Jewish President". That's the title of New York magazine's lead article, written by John Heilemann and quoting a major Obama fundraiser.
Listening to Obama speak at the United Nations on Wednesday many would nod in agreement, not less in Palestine and the Arab world.
The US President has embraced the rejectionist Israeli position on the question of international recognition of an independent Palestinian state.
But that's not a Jewish position. It's a radical Zionist position. Many Jews, including US and Israeli Jews, do not embrace such extremist views.
But the fact that Obama surpassed his predecessor

As many know in American
by Simorgh5555 on Thu Sep 22, 2011 04:05 PM PDTAs many know in American politics what is said inprivate is not what is said in public. Obama's private thoughts relating to Palestinian statehood and expressed to Netanyahu has been well documented. Obama must ask that the United States exercise its veto othewise it would be catastrophic for his second term election campaign. The Palestinian resolution will almost certainly get passed in the United Nations General Assembley so Obama knows this. Do you think that Jimmy Carter, the author of Israel Peace not apartheid would have done anything if he were in Obama's shoes? Carter himselfwas onCEO quoted as saying that to oppose Israel would be political suicide. This is the way the American political system work and those hoping Obama would try and reinvent the wheel were wrong. Israel is just one of the obstacles he has faced incluing a hostile congress. Obama is not a Jewish president and tbosee who are the most zealous supporters of Israel which Ameerican presidents must count on are Evangelical Christians who support Israel more than Jews themselves.
