Iran demands access to accused U.S. plotter

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran demanded consular access on Sunday to a man held in the United States over a suspected plot to kill the Saudi ambassador and vowed to respond robustly to any "inappropriate measure" by the West.

Manssor Arbabsiar, who holds U.S. and Iranian citizenship, was arrested in September over the plot which Tehran called a fabricated "comedy show" but which U.S. lawmakers said was "very real" and showed the need for tougher sanctions on Iran.

"Any inappropriate measure against Iran, whether political or security-related, will be strongly confronted by the Iranian nation," Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said, accusing Washington of inventing the plot to divert attention from the "Occupy Wall Street" protests.

The US side must have some evidence to prove its case, otherwise the idea of sanctions will not be successful at the UN. The poor have nothing to lose. And many--the majority-- among the wealthy Iranians blame the regime, if further sanctions are imposed. They are rich and want to get richer. With IRGC controlling almost all economic sectors, they have little chance of more success. All state projects also go to the members of IRGC.

 Hi! GR,

This case is a tricky case! The guy has not been proved guilty yet, but they have already talked about more sanctions! I can't wait for the trial....OMG!..it will be the trial of the century! An international trial....Let's see what evidence US has and what defence IRI can offer!

This article says,

"The 56-year-old Mr Arbabsiar, a one-time car salesman with dual US-Iranian citizenship, could face a life prison sentence if convicted on all charges."

IR officials claim IR condemns terrorism of any kind. They can't be taken seriously! What EA wrote is a perfect example of IR officials' hypocrisy. They talk about legalities while lynching Iranians without due legal processes. Iranian lawyers end up in prison for defending their clients.

IRI is ready to see the evidence:

//latimesblogs.latimes.com/world_now/2011/10/iran-we-are-ready-to-discuss-alleged-plot.html

"We are ready to examine with deliberation any issue, even if it was fabricated," Salehi was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency.

He said Iran has asked U.S. authorities to provide information about the alleged plot, but added that  Saudi authorities were aware that "this scenario aims to drive a wedge between regional countries."

Hi! Mouse,

This guy needs a lawyer who is neither American nor Iranian to defend him........

Hi! RG,

IRI wanted to see this guy.......let see if IRI offers to hire a lawyer for him?

Esfand Aashena

Yolanda they want access because o previous Ahmadi's initiative!

by Esfand Aashena on

One of Ahmadi's initiatives among his many other accomplishments, like eliminating unemployment, reducing inflation to near 0%, claiming Cyrus as a hero, eliminating Government subsidies (replacing it with cash subsidies :-), is providing defense for Iranians accused in other countries.

When you go to Iran's airport in Tehran there are big signs advertising that if you need legal assistance in other countries contact your Islamic Republic counsulate in the country that you are accused of.  It's just a show and who in their mind want to have anything to do with an Islamic Republic's consulate?!  That's like an additional exhibit in the prosecution case!

Islamic Republic is all about hollow claims and gooey!

Everything is sacred

Yes, the reason Iranians have to carry IR passports is because IR does not recognize dual citizenship. Otherwise no sane person would carry one. I don't think anyone would willingly want to be identified with IR. This can be used as a technicality to stop or delay IR reps meeting the guy!

Hi! GR,

Well, IRI is eager to see this guy......I have a feeling that IRI is nervous.......IRI must have something in this guy's hand.....

I have a feeling that IRI will insist on seeing this guy 'cause he has an Iranian passport also.....dual citizenship?

I make a prediction here: US government will offer plea bargain to this guy.....so US government can avoid "some" type of embarrassment and keep its sting operation secret!

G. Rahmanian

I agree with you and Faramarz that IR representatives should not see the guy. Based on US immigration laws, the guy is American. IR does not recognize double citizenship, so it has no right to meet him!!!

Thank you, Faramarz, for your post! Great analysis and prediction!

I feel sorry this this dude! He is sandwiched or trapped between IRI and US government.......he has relatives in Iran......there is no easy way out for him!

The Regime wants a private meeting so that they let Arbabsiar know that if he opens his mouth and cooperates with FBI, some family members in Iran will pay a price. Also they are going to promise him that they will take some American hostages (like the hikers) at some point and will try to swap for him.

The fact that the American hikers only got visited twice by the Swiss Ambassador in two years should tell the US government how to reply to this request.

However, I believe that they should allow his cousin who is a 2-star General in Ghods Force to come to New York and visit him on humanitarian grounds!

Hi! GR,

The key to this case is where he got his $100,000? If the source is IRI, the guy is in some type of trouble.........he may not be a terrorist, he can be an IRI middle man, liason officer, coordinator, business partner, etc......

If I was him, I would not let IRI defend me.....thanks, but no thanks!

I will follow this case to the end!

You don't say that, Yolanda. What image problem?

Common Protocol?

by G. Rahmanian on

The US has been looking for a common protocol since the take over of the US embassy thirty-some years ago. They just dont seem to be able to find one. There's a rumor Ronald Reagan sent a Christmas cake with the draft of a comprehensive plan for one hidden inside it, but the Ayatollahs threw the cake away without opening the box. Maybe, Obama should send some baclava for the eid al fitr with a new draft. Who knows, maybe the mullahs will decide to eat the baclava, after all!

G. Rahmanian

"I guess they wanted their $100,000 back!"

by G. Rahmanian on

That was very funny, Yolanda. Maybe not funny at all! Maybe that's what they really want. As some would like to say these days, "Let's wait and see!" Of course, they tell you that after claiming the plot is a US fabrication. I don't understand what we have to wait for, if they already know the answers!

...........

by yolanda on

If the guy wants to prove that he is innocent & he does not work for IRI, he better keeps a distance from IRI's consular assitance!

If IRI comes out to defend this guy, it will make matter worse! IRI has image problem!

After all is said and done, this might turn into a "Chevrolet" diplomacy after all. They already have  had direct contacts over this matter, and the UN mission  keeps on denying it.

All its missing is Trita with his red phone, to the rescue! Kudos to you know who.

US revealed the plot after 2 hikers were released!

IRI denies any involvment, but demands consular access! I guess they wanted their $100,000 back!

Interesting!
