Iran's parliament has re-elected a conservative critic of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as speaker.

Ali Larijani will serve for another year after beating Gholam Ali Haddad Adel by 177 votes to 89 in the Majlis.

Both are close to the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, but Mr Haddad Adel wanted a less confrontational approach with the president.

Conservative opponents of Mr Ahmadinejad won a majority in the recent parliamentary elections.

That we are not merely opposing a 'Government' as the reformists ( Shirin Khanoum, HAmid Dabashi, Fatemeh Haghigatjoo, Mohsen Kadivar, Massoud Behnoud, Ramin Jahanbegloo, and other experts on BBC Persian) claim but the 'Regime' in it's entirety ...

Next step will consist on how to replace it and with what ...

I'm sure you will agree That's the hardest part ...

Finding how is what will make "Hambasteghi" between Constitutionalists like me and Jomhurykhahs like you truly meaningful as opposed to Wishful thinkers like Bavafa who advocate it without explaining how or to what purpose ...

Regime's Next President

by Faramarz on

There was a great discussion on Ofogh (VoA) a couple of weeks ago and one of the commentators made the following observation/prediction.

Larijani will be the next Speaker of Majlis because Khamenei wants a strong person at Majlis opposing Ahmadinejad in his last year at the office making sure that he doesn't get out of line.

But the next president of the Regime will be Haddad Adel because he is related to Khamenei (Haddad Adel's daughter is Mojtaba Khamenei's wife) and will be completely subservient to Vali Faghih. His argument was that in the 34 years of the IR Regime, the "elected" president always became a challenge to Vali Faghih and Khamenei is trying to avoid that in these critical times.
