David Nalbandian

Armenian

I hereby nominate Gervasio Esteban David Ezequiel Nalbandian or just David Nalbandian, the recent winner of first Masters series title as the Iranian of the day, just because of his family name; although he is Argentinian and of Armenian descent! Nalbandian won the first Masters Series title of his career with a superb 1-6 6-3 6-3 triumph over world number one Roger Federer in Madrid>>>

...David's Armenian grandfather moved from Armenia to Argentine and got married. His son Norberto who was a salesman married a blonde Argentinian girl named Alda who gave birth to David.
Since the grandfather's last name is Iranian he was probably from Iran but claimed to be from Armenia just like today's young, show-off, pea-brained California Iranians who claim to be Italian because they're ashamed of their own birthplace.

ian is not always Iranian

by bahmani on

According to the Armenian Heritage Organization;

"...Most Armenian names end in "ian" or "yan," meaning the "son of ," but some Diaspora Armenians have changed these endings to blend in their host societies. Today in Turkey "oglu" often replaces "ian," while Russian Armenians may change the endings to "ov"; e.g., Gary Kasparov, Serge Parajanov. A name ending in "ian" is not always exclusively Armenian, since the ending can also be occasionally found in names in Irish, Persian, English, Philippine and some other cultures."

My point is that I would expect IOD to actually be Iranian or at least have lived or been born in Iran, or at a minimum have give some amazing Iranian service. I am kind of tired of awarding non-deserving IOD status. Including Aghassi BTW.

No Nalbandian is Iranian

Mr.Bahmani

Nal means horse shoe and is an Arabic word. Mainland Armenians do not have mix arabic family names.(ian is a Pahlavi Suffix) Those who live in Iran only have such combinations.

Armenians aren't always Iranians.

by bahmani on

Some Iranians are Armenian, but not all Armenians are Iranian. Iranian of the day has to be an Iranian or of Iranian descent. You want an Iranian tennis player that is also Armenian? Vote for Andre Aghassi, whose Dad is also Assyrian.
