Amir Abbas Hoveyda's tragic fate on 7th April 1979 marked the beginning of the end of civilization in Iran and years of bloodshed, ignorance, and darkness. May he rest in peace.

if there were a few willing Bahais to help run the affairs for the country, this country and this nation would have come out of dark ages 160 years ago.
we would have been on top of the world.
any good person any intelectual any wise man anyone who seemed to do better than ahkhoon was murdered for the crime of relation to bahai.
what a pitty, learning it the hard way and plenty more to come it seems.

Chill out, Tahiri

by Anonymous-today (not verified) on

Dude, it would help if you read a post before bursting a vein responding to it. I said "... he was vilified for being a 'homosexual' and a 'closet Bahahi'...". Note the quotation marks around the terms homosexual and closet Bahai. In English (and even in Persian) an expression enclosed in quotation is referenced to another party not the writer.

these people kill with impunity, they attach a bahai or zionist to anyone and that makes it halal for them to kill.
that is who they are, and the past 30yrs has only exposed their reality. little they know ah-khoond and mullah are commisioned to destroy the very thing they attemp to preserve.
for this type the only teacher is time

And don't forget...

by Setiz (not verified) on

Yazdi's piece on youtube that claims that Hoveida was shot before entering the court by a known mulla. So most of what is said in this video regarding any verdict and formal execution of Hoveida is in contradiction of Yazdi's claims, and an indication of the typical piled up lies of the IRI.

Jamshid....

by Setiz (not verified) on

It takes a lot of courage to say that you now know that you were deceived and you were wrong, the courage that most of now disenchanted islamists and leftists still do not have, while they continue to hang on to their failed ideology and empty emotions of hatred and I-still-know-it-all mentality.

It should also be mentioned that at the time it was rumored that Hoveida was baha'i, and that was used against him by mullas and islamists.

Anonymous-today he was not "closet Bahai"!!!!

by Tahirih on

He was born to a bahai mother ,and it does not make him a bahai.I can not grasp why people try ,by force make him a bahai!?

Bahai's can not take part in partisan politics, and when we are bahai's we give our life but do not recant. So please I am not arguing that wheter he was a homosexual or nor ,but he WAS NOT A BAHAI OR AS YOU CALL IT ' closet bahai".

The way he was killed was inhuman ,and cowardly, wheter he was a bahai, muslim ,jew, christian,or budist.

May he rest in peace. Iran enjoyed its most prosperous era during Hoveyda's tenure as prime minister. A prime minster who drove a blue "peykaan" to his work with no chaufeur and no bodyguards, whose most spectacular belonging was a small villa in Shomal.

The Islamists and leftists tried hard to spread lies about him in the 70s. They succeeded in deceiving the masses. Shame on them and shame on me and others who once believed and acted on those lies.

I don't believe in deities. But I sometimes think that if there is a God, maybe He gave us the miserable IRI as a way of punishing us for blindly turning against those who cared for us most, in favor of those who wanted to enslave us.

Today, Hoveyda's name is rightfully redeemed among Iranians. God bless his soul.

rest in peace hamvatan....

by ali1348 (not verified) on

I agree with many of my countrymen here that hoveyda was a true patriot.
I think many of us would not have the courage to stay and take our chances with the akhoonds' version of justice.
I personally believe that the mullahs are tools of the british and the french. the shah did not sign an extension to the 25 year contract sharing the wealth from oil exports with the brits and other oil companies.
In the end, he should have...since now, the country is ruined AND the oil is being siphoned away for free or whatever profits come through go into the pockets of these buthcer mullahs!
I pray for a day soon that these akhoonds will be history! javid iran

God Bless Hoveyda

by Farhad Sepahbody on

There are two sides to every story but in only one resides the truth.

My maternal cousin Amir Abbas Hoveyda a humanitarian and generous man of great qualities as wrote Mahmoud Ghaffari in the Iranian
See link: //iranian.com/Opinion/2003/June/Hoveyda/index.html

had to be sacrificed by two opposing camps, one to save the crown the other to trash it.

Four years before the revolution Hoveyda visited my father Anoshiravan Sepahbody at his home in Tehran as he did on a number of occasions. Click link below:
//www.hoveyda.org/sepahbody-ghavam.html

I was there: My Father urged him “ you should resign forthwith as Prime Minister for the SAVAK apparatus has just been incorporated by name only under the Prime Ministry and you have nothing to do with them, later on you will be held responsible for everything they do".

Hoveyda’s answer was: “No one under our regime can resign by himself, one has to be fired first.” Don’t wait for it replied my father, say you are very ill and quit right now.

The rest is now history...

Thanks But cannot afford buying them ;0)

by Darius Kadivar on

Thanks anonymous, I do have one or two Pahlavi coins as a collection which belonged to my father but most of these items are too expensive. Sometimes if one is lucky though you can make a good deal on ebay. For those who can afford it however or film producers who want to rent memorabilia of Qajar, Pahlavi or even current regime to use in historical films, I recommend this website: //irancollection.alborzi.com/sitemap.html I say this because Unfortunately most films made even in Iran meant to be historical often neglect AUTHENTICITY and even the costumes and medals are innacurate. best, DK

Truth is somewhere in the middle

by Anonymous-today (not verified) on

Hoveyda was neither the hero some make him out to be neither the monster others accuse him of being. He like his brother Ferydoun belonged to a class of intellectuals who bought into Pahlvis version of modernity and hence did some good, some bad and some terrible things. His execution was unjust and especially manner with which it was conducted was appalling. Not that any of the other ones were any better. Those who were quiet about it or quietly approving paid the price later. But if Hoveyda is to take credit for the good things he did during his tenure then he should take the blame for the bad things that happened on his watch too. If you work for the regime at the highest rank then you can’t wash your hands off its negatives. It’s like what Rafsanjani has been doing for the last 15 years trying to distance himself from the mass killings of 1988 and assassination of opponents in the early 1990’s. By the way, Hoveyda showed extremely poor judgment by not leaving Iran. He was routinely vilified in the 70’s as a "homosexual" and "closet Bahai". The vulgar lumpens who sat at his trial would have killed him just for that.

Asses Rule! ( To : Abarmard)

by Ali P. on

Dear Abarmard:

I repect your right to have an opinion and express it here ( well, anywhere, for that matter!)

I personally look at the content of statements, as well as their source, and draw my own conclusions. I appreciate it,when an informative article is cited as to it's source, as is left up to me- the reader- to make up my own mind.

As to your statement of "Please do not quote from an ass such as...", I don't believe if it is healthy, or even feasable!

I see asses are quoted here on this site ALL THE TIME!

Hell, asses write commentary on this site all over the place!( Some may even argue- can you BELIEVE it- I am one!)

But I would be proud to be an ass, to someone! Do not stand for anything, if you do not want to be called an "ass"!

Dialogue of asses is what makes this site interesting. Do you really want asses banned from this site? I don't believe you do. You want those asses, you need those asses!

I don't know about you, but  I hate  to be here, with all the people who agree with me on everything.; I'll never learn anything, I'll never grow.

Thank God for Faribors Maleknasri, M.D., for Q, for Mazloom, for MKO sympathizer, for Kamangir, for IRANdokht, and majid, and RedWine and Darius Kadivar and for n.zanincanadai and thank God for Abarmard, and everyone else who takes me to that uncomfortable zone, where I have to take a look from a different angle, to long held beliefs, and reconsider them.

I appreciated  your comment, as I always do reading your inputs.

Yours,

Ali P.

The events that happend for the past thirty years clearly shows that we Iranians did not deserve men like Hoveyda and thus we got what we deserve. In thirtheen years that he was a PM, a price of of many things including bus tickets stayed the same! try to get that in many countries including current IRI regime.

Mr. Ali P.

by Abarmard on

Dear Ali,

Although I agree with what you are thinking about Mr. Hoveyda and believe that he should have not been terrorized by Khalkhali, I need to add that:

Please do not quote from an ass such as Mr. Milani. I believe that he is a good writer, but that is as far as it goes. Just look at the camp that he is in to know what personality he has. I have no respect for him based on his ideologies or political standings. He is a clear sell out and I don't trust what he says.

RIP Mr Hoveyda BUT ...

by botshekan (not verified) on

You were a mjor partner in the downfall of the Shah's regime. For 13 years as his prime minister and a few more years from behind the scene, you single-handedly pandered to the Shah's meglomania. You assisted, together with the likes of your rivals, Alam and Nassiri, in gratifying the Shah's delusions of grandeur and omnipotence. You were not stupid in not knowing what you were doing but you did so with the full knowledge of the Shah's insatiable appetite for being kowtowed. You lied and lied to your master in order to be kept in your seat of power. You turned a blind eye to the atrocities of the SAVAK, while under the law the head of that organization was your deputy and had to report to you. Yet, you decided to ignore the law and remain in that seat as long the Shah was happy. You oversaw billions of dollars being plundered through commisions and unrefundable loans and although you did not make any financial gains from these transactions, you did enjoy the favors of their recepients in tightening your hold to the seat of power. Mr Hoveyda, you created the system in which you and milions of others were the ultimate victims but in your short and unfair trial you were blaming the same system in your defense. Mr Hoveyda, your self-righteous belief cost the nation a great deal. You could have been a moderating influence to the Shah's excesses but instead you abetted and encouraged him in his mad race on the Road to Perdition.

Mr Hoveyda, I utterly condemn the treatement you received in the hands of the blood thirsty mullahs BUT I wished you could stay alive until the day that a people's commision of truth would be able to question you for your share in the path to the Great Destruction of Iran.

The video I put up was a program aired by the Islamic Republic's Television and therefore the commentary is biaised and against the former Prime Minister. It does include interesting footage however from the video archives.

Also below an article on Hoveyda's Brother Fereydoune who was a major diplomat at the UN and also involved in cultural activities of major effect:

In the future long after the IRI stinking mafia is gone, we'll also remember their 'contributions' to Iran, which goes far beyond Swiss banks and similar stories.

Hoveyda loved Iran and did a lot for Iranians. May God bless his soul.

Hoveyda's destiny should be a lesson to Sardars & Ayatollahs...!

by farrad02 on

He made many mistakes, like any other politicians of the last regime and this regime (and the next one, no doubt!) And he was a YES MAN! Like many others of his time and many in the current regime!

And no doubt, Hoveyda was crushed in the merciless wheels of a ruthless machine that he himself had a role setting in motion, many years before the revolution of 1979! If he had used his God given talents and intellect to steer Shah in a more reasonable direction, he may have been alive today, along with his beloved secularist monarchy!

But listen to his words! This was an educated man who valued learning! He had a chance to run away but he didn't! Because he REALLY believed that he had NOT betrayed his country and believed that in a popular revolution, the forces of reason were no doubt going to be sitting in judgement of his fate!    ANd he believed he had nothing to be afraid of!!

Hoveyda was wrong (like all IRANIANS who thought the revolution will be just; it will be an improvement and it will change things for better!)

But more than anyone else, Hoveyda's destiny should be a lesson to the Ayatollahs and Sardars and politicians at the helm of the corrupted, disease infested apparatus named The Islamic Republic of Iran!  The IRI will fall and it will fall hard! And the IRI stakeholders must realize that their end game will not be much better than Hoveyda's, if they don't change the course of history, while they can!

Ali P.

The Persian Sphynx

by Ali P. on

Hoveyda was offered , and had, an opportunity to leave Iran before Feb. 12, 1979. He believed in his service, and since he  had not piled a fortune, and had no blood on his hands( by all accounts) he decided to stay and defend his record, no matter which side wins. His intention was to turn his trial to a platform to explain to the world, the progress Iran had made during his era as the prime minister.

He had also helped Khomeini's family to get passports quickly(back in 1963) , and had helped Bazargan and some of his peers face more favorable sentences, and provided them with better housing facilities during their sentences. Bazaran had personally pleaded his case with Khomeini, and the Great Liar, had acted like he was convinced by Bazargan's arguments on Hoveyda's behalf, while all along giving Khalkhali the green light to do what he ended up doing.

( From the book" Moamaayeh Hoveyda", by Abbas Milani)

God Bless His Soul

by Mort Gilani on

I could not help thinking what a bunch of douche bags we have been after watching this clip .  Hoveyda was a good statesman during an era of progress, a foot soldier for his country, and an exemplary leader for his time. Despite his diligent service, he was mistreated by his stupid peers, and a prejudiced public. This clip is a good reminder how low Iranian psyche can sink.
