MISSUNDERSTANDING? OR OWN PROTECTION?
by persian (not verified) on Thu Apr 03, 2008 12:57 AM PDTWATCHING FEW TIMES IT SEEMS THAT THERE IS MISSUNDERSTADING CONVERSATION,BUT IN MY VIEW
PROFESSORS AND STUDENTS THERE ARE NOT SAFE IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY.
No wonder Iran is the way it
by Anonymousv (not verified) on Tue Apr 01, 2008 11:22 AM PDTNo wonder Iran is the way it is! Why does he call him "Amele Biganeh"??
He sounds more like an interrogator in Evin than a professor! ARe all professors in universities like him??
Can somebody translate what
by Anon1234 (not verified) on Tue Apr 01, 2008 10:17 AM PDTCan somebody translate what the student and prof are saying into english? As a first generation with average fluency, I had trouble understanding what the argument was about and what the student was saying....
Give it a break, people!
by Anonymous-1 (not verified) on Tue Apr 01, 2008 09:51 AM PDTAll those people drawing broad conclusion about Iranian character, blah, blah, blah. Give it a rest. Stop this self-hating, Iranian-hating rubbish. Shit happens anywhere. Iranians scream at eache other (like Italians), Amercians balckmail their students into sleeping with them for better marks. So what? What matters is that the student gave as good as he took. But please!

Crazy Professor
by A Hakkak (not verified) on Tue Apr 01, 2008 05:59 AM PDTThe guy is a half-ass physics professor (his name is Gholtoghchian) at Elm-o-Sanat. Yes he's Armenian but also a big time khayemal of the hezbollahi gang of that university which is probably the strongest group of academics in Iran's political scene. President Ahmadinejad is one of them. The other two professors in the movie are a janbaz (the guy who's trying to calm Gholtoghchian down) and the other one sitting at the end of the table is Aliahmadi who's a professor of industrial engineering and also the current head of the ministry of education (amoozesh va parvaresh).
These guys are not supernuts but they're part of the same mafia who sends out basijis out to kick people's ass. I personally had the honor of having my ass handed over to me by a basiji group of elmosanat students in a totally different part of town. So it's REALLY fun to see these guys humiliated like this! Gholtoghchian beshin roo sathe shibdar biya payin pedarjan!

Just like Pre-79 Farsi Classes...
by Darius Kadivar on Tue Apr 01, 2008 02:37 AM PDTGee this reminds me of some of my terrifying Farsi Teachers before the Revolution. Same mentality.
Fortunately all teachers are not like that and I had some very good ones but clearly some have not evolved since the Pre-historic times.

The poor guy is
by Anonymous1 (not verified) on Mon Mar 31, 2008 10:52 PM PDTThe poor guy is Iranian-Armenian and he's just a prof. He's arguing with a student who is pissed about some class mark.
Why do you people make so many conclusions when they haven't even seen what happens before and after the video or know who the people in the video are?

The problem is sexual
by Shahvat Mirza (not verified) on Mon Mar 31, 2008 09:21 PM PDTBoth professor and the student are suffering from sexual starvation, it shows in their voice. Once they pass that stage they will be friends again....
Our national character could use some alterations!!
by Irooni in u.s. (not verified) on Mon Mar 31, 2008 09:16 PM PDTThis incident is not necessarily an Iranian phenomenon, but Persians do exhibit more than their share of nervous outbursts and anger toward the slightest provocations. In my observations, I have noticed a strong connection between being super Ta'arofee and having low tolerance for anything deemed as "rude."
Is this a Physics dept?
by nima53 (not verified) on Mon Mar 31, 2008 06:46 PM PDTWhat's funny to me is that these guys seem to be in the Math-Physics dept. I think they were talking about Einstein's relativity. areh?
If so, then it's pretty sad, isnt it?
But then again, there is a reason Iran is the backward shit-hole it is today: Its people still dont understand how to address each other properly. EVERYTHING is with zoor and chomagh. From sar to tah. And if you say something against the flow, the reply most likely is: "khafeh sho zer nazan".

Why are you surprised. This
by Evan Rock (not verified) on Mon Mar 31, 2008 04:50 PM PDTWhy are you surprised. This is the way their fathers talk to them at home. Freedom of speech and independent thinking is foreign to Iranians. Go ahead and call me a Kurdish, Turkish seperatist. Better yet call me an agent of the British.
Keep living in your Islamic ignorance.
Great...Just what we don't need

he would not get fired in the US
by Anonymous8 (not verified) on Mon Mar 31, 2008 03:47 PM PDTthere will be embarrassment for sure, so he may resign, but he won't get fired over something like this. There are tenured professors with more serious personal conduct charges running around America's colleges.
That's what Tenure is for. It's a tradeoff that academia has made a long time ago which accepts occasional bad apples like this in exchange for the chance to have fresh and honest perspectives in the classroom.
The response of the faculty
by pNasr (not verified) on Mon Mar 31, 2008 03:12 PM PDTThe response of the faculty is simply not acceptable. The respect must be mutual. I have been a professor in Ohio for five years, and I have never had such an encounter because I always treat my students with respect and dignity. Just because someone is a student, that does not make them less human. And humans need respect no matter the status or position. The faculty is out of line, and I would fire him in a heart beat. Peace
nothing new
by sohrab (not verified) on Mon Mar 31, 2008 01:55 PM PDTthat's actually quite polite and pleasant compared to how we were treated with our teachers in school...if you take out the student shouting back, the rest of it is very normal occurrence in iranian schools
This type of idiot aplenty in IRI universities' tenured posts
by farrad02 on Mon Mar 31, 2008 01:27 PM PDTThe student is young and has a certain latitude in making mistakes or bad judgement. But the professor needs to control himself. We don't know who this professor is and what was the background for this argument. But the fact that he is still a tenured professor in Iran, means he is a political appointee and most likely isn't worthy of being a professor!
