Caveh Zahedi

Interview with director of "I am a Sex Addict"

Director, Caveh Zahedi's film, I Am A Sex Addict (2005), took fifteen years to make, due to financial and production difficulties. Through re-enactments, the film recounted Zahedi's struggle with his addiction to prostitutes and the havoc it wreaked on his marriages and romantic relationships. He won the Gotham Award for "Best Film Not Playing in a Theater Near You,"  and IFC Films picked up the film.  Zahedi has also appeared in several films in acting roles.  He teaches film classes at San Francisco State University and California College of the Arts in Oakland.

"Anyone" Iranian

by ymous (not verified) on

I do believe, in the past, and many times over, it was explained by JJ that the Iranian of the day is just about anyone Iranian -- almost Iranian, Iranian in hiding, Iranian from one point of view, Iranian from around the corner, Iranian in disguise.... !!! or in fact
"Anyone" Iranian who others may have a shred of interest in! (Of course JJ didn't explain it quite that way!)
and I am not being facetious,
I honestly agree with the fact that anyone including animals )!( like my pet Parrot who speaks wonderful Persian , says "salaaaam" and "ay baba ay baba" can be Iranian of the day!

So live and let live people!
Don't hold it so hard = inghdr sakht nagireed!

Party Girl; Artistic choice, as always

by 135 (not verified) on

Dear Party Girl; I thank you for introducing him to us. I didn't know him, despite being a film addict.

I just downloaded and watched the film.
His work lies at Woody Allen's level, despite his low budget - which btw makes it more artistic.
I personally loved it.

We will be hearing from him more frequently on international scenes in near future.
Those who can't relate to Allen or Lynch's works, or films like Irréversible, Five or Shortbus won't be liking this film.
His next film might fall in taste by a wider audience.

He's just showing how our sexuality is inhibited and neglected and does not receive the extended attention we pay for instance to our stomachs, which in comparison to sexuality rewards us with much less dopamine.
Reproducing is a natural built-in function. We don't die if we avoid it though - not like eating or drinking - therefore, nature has come up with a clever solution; adding a massive pleasure sensation to it, easily provoking and encouraging us to think, plan and engage in it.

i think i know who "sick" is and this is typical behavior for her. everyone thinks she is just the sweetest thing but she is the biggest hypocrite on this site. it makes me want to puke sometimes.

oh.. and JJ? it will be VERY obvious if you don't post this comment. you're becoming just a little too obvious about your favoritism.

He is all yours

I think you are sick my dear. Sick with jealousy. Sick with ignorance. Sick with prejudice.

Wow! Be my guest and enjoy likes of him. Maybe he is your type of iranian, but not mine at all.

No I have not seen his sensational movie, but have seen a book he published long time ago on the same subject which is far more disturbing. I fist confused him with a relative of Ardeshir Zahedi and got curious.

Yes I am idealizing iranians for sure, but my ideal iranian is neither a prostitute nor a mulla (you don't see the similarities here, do you?).

There are so many decent iranians amongst us that better deserve to be called iranian of the day (for me), but for you, you're welcome to admire and endear him.

I have watched the movie 2 years ago!

by Shahrokh T (not verified) on

I have watched it and it was not a big deal. The only thing I could remember is nude girls on it. The reasons that I have rented were, the producer is an Iranian and it was rated R.
Mnay years ago, a comment for Iranian movies was, "Na Sar dasht na Tah".

You didn't even see his movie. You watched him on CNN and decided that he is a sick dirty man?!!!

I think you are sick my dear. Sick with jealousy. Sick with ignorance. Sick with prejudice.

I will go rent his movie and watch it tonight. I think he is a perfectly good Iranian of the Day, even if after seeing his movie, I decide I don't like it. My preferences and tasts should not take anything away from his achievements.

Iranian of tomorrow if not today

by Zara (not verified) on

He's a brilliantly original artist who thinks way outside the box and works from a place of deep personal integrity and genuine heart. You may not get what he's up to, that's the way it goes with artists who take big risks. But he'll be well remembered in years to come.

Majid / Niki

by American Wife (not verified) on

I agree with both of you.  It WOULD appear that Iranian of the Day should have some kind of contributing value to the community as Majid says... but then I read Niki and I totally agree with that too!  Certainly here... on iranian.com.  If you look at this as a social forum (with obvious political discussions), then Iranian of the Day SHOULD be the "everyman".  What really tipped it for me was Party Girl's suggestion of making Majid IOTD.  Maybe she was being facetious but her words made me think.... why wouldn't any of the incredibly bright and entertaining minds HERE be candidates.  Maybe some might not want to "go public" with too much information but, man, THIS is THE mother lode of Iranian of the Day in my book.

So consider this my own personal tribute to you ALL.

Iranian of the day NOT

by Anonymous irani (not verified) on

He was interviewed on CNN a while back.

Ordinary iranians or iranians with major achievement are often displayed under "Iranian of the day". This person is a sick dirty man, as sick as killer mullas and amongst the worst of iranians, if he can be related to the sacred iran at all. He is no iranian of the day. Maybe iranian of the night, but certainly not the day.

The movies is too deeply

by your friend (not verified) on

The movies is too deeply philosophical, spiritual, and profound for the average Iranian man to grasp; however, I do recommend it to all Iranian men who objectify women as sexual objects and those who try to mask their inadequacies as human beings with more sex.

As the interviewr points out, the movie is actually anti-sexual and delves into so many aspects: religion, morality, spirituality, etc....

The moral of the story is that when you objectify women as sex objects as most Iranian men do, you can never have "real" sex and will never enjoy real intimacy that an actualized man can experience.

Party Girl: What a fascinating find. You rock.

Another case of make up disease

Its like saying fat people have no choice, its just that they are addicted to food, every one is addicted to sex, food ... when they are born, they learn to control the urge as they grow.

Dear Party girl

by Majid on

Please read "MY" comment again.

1- the case I refered to was NOT posted by "YOU" !

2- I did NOT refer to this specific "iranian of the day", I was just agreeing with "a boy" in regards to the whole issue, as a "big picture".

3-While I KNOW and concede that JJ is "THE" decider here, "it's his site", I, as well as some others were just wondering....."what does it take to......"

4-You wrote  " I think it's important to use the internet to find Iranians active all over the world and to get to know them"..............

In that particular case that I refered to, what "ACTIVITY" that person was involved in ? other than just "BEING" ??

5-NOW..........back to the MOST important issue here.........MY childhood picture....LOL

OK.....let's see........I "WAS" an iranian boy..........THAT should be sufficent.....LOL

P.S.  "YOU" are doing a great job here and I'm jealous.

Niki Tehranchi

Party Girl Jan I agree 100%

by Niki Tehranchi on

Iranian of the Day is neither a prize nor an award nor should it be reserved only for people who wins prizes and awards. Like you, I am interested in learning about fellow Iranians all over the world, from all walks of life. Not just famous ones or do-gooders though this site has provided information about many very deserving individuals but also the average Iranian like me and you and the majority of readers on this site, with as many flaws as they have qualities, striving to achieve their dream no matter what circumstances they find themselves in.

I have sent many Iranians of the Day ideas to the editor, from pro bono lawyers, to charity founders, from actors to doctors, to technology innovators and business tycoons. Like you said, I don't just send the Iranians whom I judge to deserve a gold medal but any and all Iranians who I find interesting and the editor then makes the choice of featuring them.

As for having 3 or 4 Iranians of the Day, I can understand how some of the readers may feel saturated with the volume but I also think to myself, how wonderful to have a "problem" such as having too many Iranians of the Day as opposed to struggling to find them. Party Girl jan, thank you for your Iranians of the Day and all your YouTube videos.

Thank you for your positive tone and conciliatory words in the face of sometimes very harsh criticism (I am not talking about the comments on this particular thread, which were very polite, but others who are intentionally cruel and vulgar in their attempt to put down their fellow Iranians).

You are my Iranian of the Day any day!

Party Girl

Dear Majid

by Party Girl on

Dear Majid:

Thank you for taking the trouble to leave a comment.  I enjoy and appreciate your kind and considerate comments in this section of the site very much.  I think the best person to address your question as regards the decision to feature an "Iranian of the Day" is JJ.  I can only share my thoughts about what little part I have in this section.

Since I started helping out on the site, I have been looking for Iranians everywhere.  They may be scientists, artists, or entrepreuners.  They could also simply be interesting people, devoid of awards or prizes or degrees.  Among other contributors who also make their recommendations, I send mine to JJ who makes the publication decision.  I think it's important to use the internet to find Iranians active all over the world and to get to know them.  I feel sad when people I have found are not featured, thinking that they would be lost to the rest of us again! (Yes, many more than are featured are found on a daily basis!)

In the case of Mr. Zahedi, this man is an accomplished artist, who has spent 15 years of his life on this project, which has also been picked up for promotion and has won awards, receiving excellent reviews.  He is an educated Iranian who is also active in academia.  Do you not think such an individual deserves to be featured, and for his efforts to be introduced to others?

There are so many Iranians inside and outside Iran who can be and some of them are featured here.  The reason is that some of the 70+ million Iranians alive are producing some excellent talent in this world!  Why wouln't you want to know about them if someone takes the trouble of finding them and featuring them?  I can't offer this to my anonymous friend, Boy, but since you have been willing to share your childhood picture with us, if you give me some information about yourself, I would be more than happy to recommend you as an Iranian of the Day, too!  You certainly have the heart and love for Iran which in my book makes you an excellent choice!

To "A boy"

by Majid on

To a certain point I totally agree with what you're saying.

Some times "iranian of the day" is a guy who takes a picture with two of his sisters in Iran !!!

WOW!!!  NO WAY !!!!

And a lot of comments go like " good for you.......you have such a great family........how lucky you are......lose that uni-braw......"

And some of us were thinking..........."what in the world did he DO to be iranian of the day"? other than..........he "was"....... as in the verb "to be"........... he just "WAS" or he "IS "  !

And one other thing, recently we have more than 3-4 "iranian of the day" each and everyday here! and before we can keep track of who? when? where? why? which day? we get 4 to 6 more!...LOL

The range is so vast that  makes you wonder..."what is the definition of..."

The concept of "Iranian of the day"

by A boy (not verified) on

Look my Iranian fellows:

I really don't have any problem with this guy. He looks intellectual, and I do belive that human being is born free and should live freely through his life.

But I think there is a misconception about the idea of "Iranian of the Day". This section should introduce somebody who has done soemthing positive for Iran, Iranians or the whole humanity even. But what about this guy or others like him.

He was a rich boy, who had the cahnce to study outside Iran without being worried about anything, and by chance he just had too much money that he got so obsessed with sex. He is ill, and his movie is nothing extraordinary.

Iranians of the day are those who has done something great, like making a fortune, or achieving a scholarly position, or struggling for freedome. NOT these sweet boys with sugar daddies who can lavish their money around the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
