Security Screener Misses Box Cutters at LaGuardia
The Great Neck man who flew from New York to St. Louis with two box cutters Friday
is an Iranian Jew who attends synagogue regularly, lives with his parents and works
with his brother selling ladies apparel in Manhattan, relatives and neighbors said
yesterday.
Joubin Kalimian, 32, was on his way from New York to Las Vegas to attend a fashion
show, his sister Jackie Shamash said. He was arrested with the cutters in his pockets
during a layover in St. Louis as he tried to get back aboard the plane.
Kalimian needed the box cutters "for opening the boxes" of clothing at
the show, Shamash said from the doorway of Kalimian's home, as their distraught father
stood beside her in a gray pinstriped suit.
"He's totally innocent," Shamash of Great Neck said. "In a day or
two, they'll realize they made a mistake."
Kalimian, who authorities said also goes by the name Joubin Kali, appeared before
federal magistrate Mary Ann Medler in U.S. District Court in St. Louis Friday and
was held in lieu of $50,000 secured bond, pending a preliminary hearing on Thursday.
He told investigators that another box cutter had been taken from him at LaGuardia
Airport before he boarded American Airlines Flight 2947 for the first leg of his
trip Friday.
The two box cutters found in St. Louis by random screening were approximately 6 inches
long and 1 inch wide with an "extremely sharp retractable blade," federal
