I write in response to the news item about Afghanistan and the Taliban group.
I should like to point out to other readers that Amnesty International is trying to help Afghan women, and many other innocent people from around the world, who deserve their basic human rights, and are deprived of them.
You can help these poor people, even by sending email messages from your computer. Just go to the page below and sign up. It is all free, and even better, it is not in any way political, so now you have no excuse.

Please join this humanitarian organisation. One simple email might actually save somebody from dying!

Subj: Silk Route Trilogy
From: MZahory@pact.pacthq.org
(Zahory, Maryam)
I entered the following recipe in a contest, which I didn't win. Thought you might want to try it and see if you like this version of Banjan (a.k.a. badenjan, eggplant) Burani. I had good reviews from other people who don't even like eggplant.
Silk Route Trilogy
Good at room temperature as well as hot. Vegetarian. Afghani home cooking. Serves 4-6 as a side dish.
Ingredients:
2 medium eggplants
1/2 Jar of Newman's Own Marinara style spaghetti sauce
1 cup plain, unsweetened yogurt
3 teaspoons finely chopped fresh garlic,
vegetable oil for shallow frying
1-2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro for garnish (optional)
salt & pepper to taste
Preparation: Preheat oven to 350?. Grease a baking dish, deep enough to hold the eggplant and Newman's Own, without bubbling over onto the floor of the oven.
In a small bowl, mix 1/2 teaspoon of garlic with the yogurt and salt to taste, refrigerate until final presentation. Peel the eggplants and cut each in half across, and then lengthwise into 1/4" slices.
Heat oil in frying pan for 2-3 minutes until oil 'shimmers', but doesn't smoke (about 350?). Fry the eggplant pieces, one or two at a time, until lightly golden. Remove to paper toweling to drain excess oil.
Tip: to prevent the eggplant from absorbing excess oil, keep the temperature of the oil up and don't crowd the pan . Layer the fried eggplant, Newman's and seasonings in the baking pan, ending with the sauce.
Cover and bake for 15-20 minutes until bubbling and the eggplant is soft. When ready to serve, spread all but 1/4 cup of yogurt sauce onto a flat serving platter. Do this at the last minute or the yogurt will weep onto the platter and dilute the sauce too much.
Arrange the eggplant slices on the yogurt bed and garnish with any remaining pan juices, the reserved yogurt and fresh chopped cilantro. Serve Silk Route Trilogy immediately.
Let me know how it worked out if you get out of your macho moods and actually cook this. I
am trying to prepare a collection of Afghan Recepies along with famous anecdotes and authentic folk stories and antics. If you think you have something that is appropriate and feel like sharing please forward it to me.
Thanks
Peace with you all!!!!
Maryam Jan,

APPROVAL OF THE CONDITIONAL USE PERMIT FOR AN ALL-MOSLEM CEMETERY
Puget Sound, Washington State, USA
On December 11,1996 The Zoning Adjustor Report and Decision was issued by the King County Department of Development and Environmental Services was issued giving the final approval for the establishing of an All-Moslem cemetery in the Puget Sound region...
The issuance of this permit is certainly a very good news for all Moslems and the future generation of Moslems to whom such an institution gives a definite identity.
Now we have the land and plans and permit, we need the financial and expert support to develop the cemetery. We would like to apply to the generosity of the community for their support...
Please send your donations to the American Moslem Foundation or contact us at (206) 588-8994.

Building permit for the Specialized Instruction School of the HOM project
The processing of the building permit for the Specialized Instruction School is progressing and is taking its course through various departments of the King County. We have been assured that the permit will be issued in due time.
The building is a large complex consisting of the school building and a temporary housing building. It has a conference hall which can be used as prayer hall. In addition it contains a library, a kitchen, a dining hall and seminar rooms.
It is a very flexible outlay and can be used for different functions and purposes both for religious teachings and also for promotion of ethnic culture and languages of different Moslem groups in the Northwest.
The project is designed so it can respond to the needs of the future generations of Muslims. Of course financial resources are needed to realize the potentials of this project...
For more information contact Dr. Mahmood Sarram at (206) 588-8994.
