Intellectuals and Nativism
==========================
A new book on Iran by Mehrzad Boroujerdi (Syracuse University Press, 1996):
"Iranian Intellectuals and the West: The Tormented Triumph of Nativism"
By drawing on the works of Michel Foucault and Edward W. Said regarding the constitution of "other-ness," Mehrzad Boroujerdi undertakes a theoretically sophisticated and empirically rich examination of the pedagogical, political, and discursive practices of post World War II Iranian intellectuals.
The book demonstrates how clerics as well as secular and lay religious intellectuals in modern Iran confronted a dual sense of other-ness with the state and the West, which resulted in dissent and nativism.
The author asserts that neither modern Iranian political culture nor the ideology that fueled the 1979 Iranian revolution was entirely Islamic in nature. He maintains that what abounded in the revolution was a nativist discourse that was much more all-encompassing and ubiquitous than Shi`a Islam.
He considers nativism as a cultural reflex on the part of many Third World intellectuals who strove to abandon, subvert, and reverse the meta-narratives, master-codes, and Eurocentric historiography of the West.
Mehrzad Boroujerdi (Ph.D., The American University, 1990) is assistant professor of political science at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University.
Before coming to Syracuse University, he was a Rockefeller Foundation Fellow at the University of Texas at Austin and a Post-doctoral fellow at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, Harvard University.

A million for the Iranica
===========================
From: Jahanshah Javid <jj@iranian.com>
According to a pamphlet published by the editors of Encyclopedia Iranica, Khosrow Eqbal has set aside $1 million in his will to support a trust fund for Encyclopedia Iranica.
The pamphlet does not say who Khosrow Eqbal is. But it doesn't matter. He's doing the right thing. There is no other project as important to our cultural preservation as the Iranica.
Yes, that's a pretty big statement. Think about it. Take a look at the Iranica at your library or... and see if you can think of anything else being done inside or outside Iran that will have as much of a lasting impact as the Iranica.

Searching for...
From: Mandy Hampson <kokanis@msn.com>
Hello everyone,
I hope you can help me. I am an English woman with an Iranian boyfriend and would like to learn Persian cooking. One problem, though: we're both vegetarian. Does anyone know of a source of recipes, especially vegetarian ones, please?
I have been to the biggest and best bookshops in London but can't even find a cookbook solely on Persian cuisine... Any ideas/details of books I could buy by mail order would be gratefully received - thanks!
Mandy

Lost & Found
From: Shahryar Oliai <oliais@river.it.gvsu.edu>
Thank you for listing this request.
I am looking for my cousin Reza Olia and his sons Kourosh and Maziar Olia who have lived in Italy for well over 21 years. He is a professor of architecture and I believe his sons are also involved in the arts.
Last I heard he lived in Rome, but may have periodically stayed in Milan as well. He used to teach at National Univ. of Iran (Daneshgah-e Melli) in that field in 1970's. I would like to establish contact with them.
Although my last name is Oliai, many years ago the census and public registrar's office misspelled theirs, not uncommon at that time!
If anyone has information about them, please contact me at:
Thank you for everyone's efforts and attention.
Sincerely, Shahryar Oliai
