A woman buys a gift on Valentine's Day 14 February 2002 in
Tehran. Young people have been for a few days on a Valentine's buying mania, with
young males and females crowding gift, perfume and flower shops across the Islamic
republic's capital. The holiday, named after the Christian patron saint of lovers,
has been celebrated over the past few years openly in this conservative country where
alcohol and discos are ostensibly banned. Neighboring Saudi Arabia has banned all
forms of celebration related to Valentine's Day this year.
