Cricket Champion Ronald Charles Irani, known as Ronnie Irani, Born: 26 October 1971,
Leigh, Lancashire a hugely confident all-rounder worked his way into the England
team for the 1996 Texaco Trophy series against India, he was subsequently given a
test debut at Edgbaston where he hit a quick-fire 34. In the next test at Lords he
played completely differently to get 41 and help save the match with Jack Russel.
However his bowling was getting slaughtered, and he was dropped for the third test,
and the following test series against Pakistan. His summer however ended on a high
note when he was recalled for the one-day series where he played well, and was selected
for the 1996/7 tour of New Zealand and Zimbabwe ahead of Mark Ealham and Adam Hollioake.
A lacklustre tour led to two years in the wilderness of the county circuit before
a fine 1999 season (and possibly the ascendancy of his good friend Nasser Hussain
to the England captaincy) led to a recall for the final Test against New Zealand.
