A computer enhanced July 22, 2002 satellite image highlights the smoke trail from
wildfires blazing in California's Sequoia National Forest. The fast moving blaze
grew to 38,000 acres July 23, forcing the evacuation of about 1,000 people as firefighters
stood ready to defend several groves of the towering, ancient trees. The fire lies
in the southern Sierra mountains about 120 miles from Los Angeles, seen near the
bottom of the image. (Modis-LRRS/Reuters)
