A group of more than 40 pilot whales that became stranded for a second day, lie in
shallow water in Eastham, Mass., Tuesday, July 30, 2002. Rescuers surrendered their
efforts to save the whales Tuesday because too many were sick or in shock over the
ordeal. The decision comes a day after vacationers and volunteers worked to push
the group of 55 pilot whales out to deeper seas after they beached about 25 miles
away at Chapin Beach in Dennis. Nine died Monday.(AP Photo/Michael Dwyer)
