Richard Reid, a British citizen and self-avowed Muslim militant, was not under the
influence of drugs nor was he coerced when he confessed to trying to blow up a transatlantic
flight with explosives in his shoes, a federal judge said June 21, 2002 in a preliminary
ruling. However, U.S. District Judge William Young stopped short of making a final
ruling on the key issue of whether confession could be used as evidence in his upcoming
trial, due to begin in November.
