Supporters hold Iran's flag and photos of President Mohammad Khatami as they listen
Khatami's speech in Takhti coliseum in Orumiyeh city 946 kms (586 miles) northwest
of Tehran in this file photo taken September 2000. For many Iranians, May 23, 1997,
was a golden day in Iran's modern history, giving them hope for peaceful democratic
changes and a relaxed society. Khatami's program of social and political freedoms
is in tatters; his outspoken allies jailed or harassed; over 50 reformist papers
silenced; and almost all of his promises unfulfilled.
