A tourist takes a picture of " The Gate of All Nations" of Persepolis,
Wednesday, May 22, 2002. Resting at the foot of craggy mountains about 850 kilometers
(460 miles) south of Tehran. Persepolis was a sprawling center for ceremonies and
worship during the Achaemenian dynasty_ the first significant kingdom of ancient
Persia. Industry and urban life are marching toward Persepolis. The winds carry the
menace: car exhaust, fumesfrom petrochemical plants, clouds that spill acid rain.
Earlier this month (May 13), a group of lawmakers and intellecutuals issued an unusually
blunt open letter demanding urgent conservation efforts at Persepolis to avoid "national
catastrophe."
