Old galaxies huddled together in clusters were once dismissed as the rest homes of
the cosmos, but scientists reported on September 13, 2002 that many of them have
massive black holes gobbling gas at their cores. Shown is a Chandra X-ray Observatory
image of the Abell 2104 cluster of galaxies. The image reveals X-ray emissions produced
by both hot gas (the blue area near the center of the image) and by accretion of
dust and gas onto supermassive black holes (the smaller blue patches on the outskirts
of the image). (NASA, Carnegie Observatories via Reuters)
