Dear sir,
I'm Hasan, an ex member of People's Mojahedin Of Iran (PMOI). I had a horrible ordeal and want you to publish our story. I sent this story to UN High Commission for Refugees and some American senators and some media outlets. This story has told on some Iranian radios and channels. Because of some security reasons I don't mention my family.
I'm an Iranian educated professional that fought near 25 years for freedom and sacrifice all my things – my wife, my son, my youth – in fight with cruel Iranian regime and now in age 50 seeking normal life because more than one year ago separated from PMOI because they changed from a political group to a sect and now living as a displaced refugee.
On January 11th, I went to Turkey and crossed the boarder. Unfortunately I was arrested by the army and spent one night in detention. After that they brought us to court, without the presence of any lawyers, they secretly made a decision and didn't tell us. They then delivered us to security forces and security forces took us to a dark cell as detainees for one week. After, one week, they lied to us by saying "you are going to Ankara to be handed to UNHCR authorities", but instead, they brought us to Customs in order to give us to Iraqi authorities. But, Iraqi authorities didn't accept us because we were Iranian nationals .
Then, the Turkish security forces made a cruel decision to throw us in a freezing river to get ride of us. We said we would be killed in the freezing cold, and tried to appeal to their humanitarian feelings but, they told us if we did not cross the river, we would be shot. They fired round of shots in the air to terrorize us, and then pushed us into the horrible freezing water. It was the most terrifying moment of our lives. Our group which ranged in age from 43 to 53 years old, struggled for their lives. One we nearly sank but kept trying to swim to stay alive.
After crossing the river all our clothing were completely frozen. After short time two helicopters flew over, and shot at us twice. I am certain they had decided to kill us to in order to claim that our death was an accident because as some refugees we would have been killed during crossing the river in freezing winter in this time of year.
The evidence proves this cruel decision because they knew that Iraqi government would reject us and because the previous week Iraqi authorities rejected another group like us from Turkish authorities. That group was detained in the same jail with us but, their case revealed and their families followed their case with their lawyers and formal UNHCR authorities and Turkish government could not get rid of them. During our detention we asked them to let us call our families, and they said today, tomorrow, this afternoon … you can call your family but, never allowed us to call. When they forced us to cross the frozen river they handed over our documents and our cell phones but they removed the sim-cards of all cell phones and nobody could call for help.
After crossing river, we walked seven hours with frozen feet's and frozen cloths. The only the love of telling our horrific story helped us to fight the cold by staying focused and alive. After three days we suffered from freezing and could not walk without feeling excruciating pain in our feet. We have flashbak and nightmares of the ordeal we went through.
We were 8 innocent refugees that tried to reach the UNHCR offices in Ankara, in order to escape from Iraqi hell because we were not safe in Iraq. Once detained in Iraqi check point, they stole our possessions, and jailed us without any reason because they hated us and said "you the PMOI ex members have killed Kurdish people, and must go away from Iraq territory".
In Erbil – capital of Kurdish local government – they only allow us to stay in city for ten days and after that we must go to security section to renew this allowance for the another ten days.
The Iraqi government took us Lissaye passer that mentioned that we could go to four countries which were Turkey, Siria, Jordan, and Kuwait. But, no country accepted to give us visas.
American authorities in Ashraf Camp took us hostage for 5 years with the excuse of protecting us but the truth was they used us as cards in a political game – political balance with PMOI and Iranian regime - and when they saw so many hunger strikes and months of protests, they began to leave Iraq and they opened the door of the camp and let people go without any valid documents.
My fellow compassionate human beings, please condemn Turkey by contacting the Turkish embassies in your area. You can protest by calling, faxing, and e-mailing them. You can also contact your senators in the United States and protest the abuse of human beings.
The more you expose Turkey and its horrible practices the better, chances of helping those who will pass through this country's borders. For the past three decades people have lost their lives crossing the Turkish brooders and those who survived were so horrified and traumatized, they do not want to re-live the memory so they do not speak. I am breaking the silence and I know many of my fellow humanitarians would care as well.
Regards
Hassan
