To my finger-printed friends

- "My only sin is in my skin* ," said the first
- "Mine is in my place of birth," said the second
- "And mine in one of my parents," said the next one

She said nothing
Just touched her belly
The baby was moving

Gisroo Mohajeri sobs next to her husband, Ali Mohajeri, a U.S. citizen, on the steps of the Federal Building in downtown Los Angeles Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002. Her 16-year-old Iranian-born son, Hossein Ahmadi, was taken into custoday three days ago when the two came to the Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS) to voluntarily register the teen-ager with immigration officials. Ahmadi now faces deportation proceedings. The Mohajeris and relatives of the hundreds of Middle Eastern men and teens who have been detained this week say they feel betrayed by the country that once offered them a safe haven. * "My only sin is in my skin" is a line from a Louis Armstrong song, "Black and Blue "
