* Help: Earthquake relief fund

* LA telethon raises $750,000

Dear Friends of the American Iranian Council,

In late December, three Board Members of the American Iranian Council, Dr. Sadeghi Nemazi, Mr. Mohsen Movaghar and Mr. Japeh Youssefi, organized in association with five television stations in Los Angeles a telethon that has raised more than $750,000 for the relief of the victims of the earthquake in Bam. AIC is proud that what may well be the most significant relief effort by Iranian Americans in response to the quake was organized in part by our leadership.

Now that the U.S. Treasury Department has issued a temporary general license for the transfer of funds to aid the afflicted in Iran, we are writing to ask that you please consider making your donations for quake relief through their effort, which was coordinated through the Islamic Muslim Association of North America (IMAN)

All donations are tax deductible and we have been assured that no part of the monies received for quake relief will be used for administrative overhead or salaries. In the near future, IMAN will be sending a representative to Iran in order to determine how and where their aid would best be utilized.

Checks can be sent to:

IMAN
3376 Motor Avenue
West Los Angeles, CA 90034

Please be sure to note in the memorandum of your check that the monies are intended for Bam quake relief. Representatives of IMAN can be reached at 310.202.8181, should you wish to make a donation via credit card.

As always, should you have any questions or ideas you wish to share with us, please call us at 609.252.9099 or reply to this email.

Sincerely,

Hooshang Amirahmadi, Ph.D.
President, AIC

* Send money to Ebadi's NGO

Here is my take as how to best and most efficiently send money to the victims of Bam earthquake: If you wish to send money to Ms Ebadi and her NGO, Iranian Children's Rights Society (read about her work), and receive tax credit (ie, tell your non-Iranian friends to contribute to this cause) then follow the instructions below (thanks to Nayer for the information).

Please make sure to note on your check: For Shirin Ebadi's account.

Bank Account at ICRS:
US Bank
Account #153490923270
Routing #122235821

Money sent to Ms Ebadi will go directly to childeren's cause in Bam. Remember, sending money to Iran NGOs has the added value of empowering them and promoting civil society in Iran.

Cheers,

MB

Our hearts go out to the victims of the earthquake, the survivors and the bereaved. The number of citizens lost has been in the thousands. Those who have miraculously spared death are guaranteed a battle of enormous proportions. Houses, businesses, infrastructures, families, relatives, all disappeared in a blink of an eye. Once the shock of lives lost sets in, once the disaster’s magnitude is realized, hopelessness sets in. As citizens of the country and of the world we need to make sure that for now the immediate needs of the victims are taken care of. Your attendance and generosity will go a long way in lending a helping hand >>> More

* Convincing KLM/ Northwest Airlines

Hello everyone,

Thank you all so much for your generosity and kindness.

I would like to update you with the some news about sending earthquake relief supplies to Iran.

Since me, my family and San Jose State University "Pars Persian Club members" sent 10 boxes of medicines through KLM (210lb) and United Airlines (450lb) without paying any extra charges with 7 members of my relatives who were on their way to Bam/Kerman. Sorry to say that some of these people lost their entire immediate family including their mother & father. I was sure I could take the rest of these medicines with my cousin today and the rest with us on Sunday, Jan 4, 04 by KLM.

You may know that on Wednesday December 31, San Jose Mercury News wrote an article "Peninsula man dies in quake; injured fiancée in Iran hospital" that I'm collecting medicines in an Iranian supermarket and as result I've received around 8 more boxes.

Yesterday we went to San Francisco airport to send 3 of these boxes with my cousin with KLM but we were surprised to hear that KLM did not agree to take the medical supplies without charges. They want to charge $150 for each additional box.

We tried to talk to the KLM/ Northwest Airlines supervisor Mr. John Seidel, NO USE. We are 2 people traveling with KLM and we each have dedicated one luggage (box) to take the medicines with us as we are allow to take two luggage's each. Now I have about extra six boxes in my hands and we are leaving on Sunday.

I NEED YOUR HELP. Could you please help me to convince the KLM to take these boxes without charges just for the humanity or find out if there are any nonprofit organizations that could deliver these boxes to Iran?

I'm sure you know how much these people and doctors need these supplies. Any help from you is greatly appreciated.

God bless you,
Kokab Ebrahimi

* A good place to start

Dear Sheila and James,

I appreciate your stance and understanding of the history of US foreign policy blunders. However, in defence of Kyle ["Taste of the senslessness"], I do not think that he was expressing his own opinion but was mentioning and lamenting the opinions expressed by some of the lesser informed individuals in the US.

I agree that reading of "All The Shah's Men" is a good place to start for Americans who are interested in understanding the history of Iran and US relations as well as the grievances and motives that led to the Hostage Crisis. It may act as a good reminder to people that the events leading to today's state of affairs did not start in 1979 but in the 1940s.

* Kettle calling the teapot black

In reply to letters in "Taste of the senslessness":

Kyle,

The problem here is that clearly your memory doesn't serve you right, and I'd hazard to guess that this might be indicative of some sort of neurological issue given the rants you display regarding the other points in your letter.

The celebrations you allude to regarding 9/11 were in Palestine, not Iran. The Iranians were extraordinarily upset and compassionate about what occurred here in the U.S.; the candle lighting, etc., was in sympathy, NOT celebration. If you'd like references about this please feel free to let me know.

Iran is not a terrorist country any more than most other countries, to include this one, are. When the U.S. supports "terrorists" (e.g. the Contras in Nicaragua come to mind most immediately, along with our support of the MEK in Iran, and our successful assistance in overthrowing Iranian, Chilean, South Vietnamese, and Dominican governments; I'd come up with more if I had the time or inclination) somehow the American people, or at least those such as yourself, are able to justify these actions as somehow "good", or in keeping with a noble cause.

I'm not aware of Iran having a recent history of overthrowing governments, population decimation and country destruction (short and long term) that comes anywhere near close to that of this country. I'm not saying that Iran is squeaky clean when it comes to questionable endeavors, especially in its support for various extra-national, i.e. what are all too often simply classified as "terrorist" organizations, but let's not have the kettle calling the teapot black.

Ms. Sheila Dadvar made excellent points in her response to you [Make peace with your library], I just want to add my two cents to show that not all Americans have a myopic perspective on a country that is deserving of better from the U.S. than it has gotten (I would recommend you pick up a copy of "All the Shah's Men" by Stephen Kinzer -- go to bestwebbuys.com/books/ to get the best price for that book, and many others I'm sure your personal library would benefit from --

To get a better understanding of some of the reasons for the embassy incident you feel is so egregious; historical perspective does tend to help one's understanding of oneself and other countries), and that we're not all so insensitive as to address ridiculous complaints at a time when thousands of families have been ripped apart by senseless tragedy and tens of thousands of dead are having to be buried. If President Bush can get beyond such pettiness, I'd like to think you'd be able to find it in your heart to do the same.

* Relief fund for orphans

Dear Fellow Iranians:

Earthquake Relief Fund for Orphans (ERFO.org) was established in the US as a section 501c charity organization in 1990.

We have supported all the needy orphans of multiple previous earthquake in Iran. Our representatives are on the scene in BAM and they report that there are close to 2000 children that no one has come to look for them as yet.

Would you please help us care for Bam's orphans.

* Urgent need: public health supplies and medicines

GENEVA, 31 December 2003 (World Health Organization) -- The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasizes the urgent health needs of the tens of thousands of people affected by the recent earthquake in Bam, Islamic Republic of Iran. The health risks of exposure to cold night temperatures, inadequate access to safe water and sanitation, and insufficient care for people's injuries are amongst the many serious health concerns.

To date, at least 26, 700 people have been buried as a result of the Bam earthquake. Approximately 30,000 are injured, and more than 12,000 of these people have been admitted to hospitals in other parts of the country. In total, the earthquake destroyed approximately 20,000 homes of the 90,000 inhabitants >>> Full text

* Historical importance

Amid the extensive reporting on the tragic earthquake at Bam, there have been brief references to the historical importance of the city. For those who wish to know more, I would like to draw their attention to two extensive and well annotated articles on that city in Encyclopedia Iranica, vol. 3 (1989), pp. 650-54. One is on the ruins of the old town by the well-known Iranian historian M.-E. Bastani Parizi, and the other covers the history and modern town by French geographer Xavier de Planhol.

Another readily available source is the book Iranian Cities by German scholar Heinz Gaube (New York: New York University Press, 1979), which has a long illustrated chapter on Bam.

* Amen

Beliefnet.com has created a prayer page for Bam. Here's a sample message:

O God, Creator of Life, you hold all things in the palm of your hand. Have mercy on the victims of this disaster and welcome them into the city of eternal light. Give those of us who may view them with enmity a sense of your grace and bring us all to the unity and peace which we long for. In the Name of the Creator, Redeemer, Sustainer, One God, forever and ever. Amen.

* Make peace with your library

In reply to letters in "Taste of the senslessness":

NO sir, your memory serves you WRONG. Iranians were among first nations who lit candles in the streets mourning the innocents. The candies were given in another country, Palestine, Israel, whatever you want to call it.

As for the aid, you should'va asked your president to send the troops to the homeless instead of making others in the other side of the country the same. Or you and your kind need a portion of it to buy some books and get educated by, so you would know that your government is not as innocent as it tries to portrait itself.

Some thirty years before the hostage crisis, an overthrown dictator came back to power with the help of the US government. and during the Iran-Iraq war the Iraqis bombarded Iranian solders by chemical bombs sent to Iraq by America. then 15-20 years later Bush and the administration uses that for an excuse to declare war on the country that has been sold the WMDs by his fellow republican Ronald Regan and Co.

The citizens of Bam are not a part of axis of evil. the 4 or 5 year old kid whose body is being dragged of the rubble never thought of helping the terrorists in that short life that got taken in 10-20 second of earthquake. We could assume that those who hate us don't know us, because there has not been proper education or the right information provided to them, and that might have been on purpose, God knows. A big percentage of them don't have internet or satellite. What is your excuse? Haven't you learn to direct your anger to the right path?

Thanks to the modern way of living there are so many shrinks you can go to and piles of self help books that you can read. The people of third country don't have access to that. But what about us who live in the greatest country? The richest? Make peace with your library. It is time for you to stop getting your sources from only one channel and start surfing the net more often.

* Taste of the senslessness

What I have decided to do might not seem too appropriate, but since this is an open forum, I just want the readers to get a taste of the senslessness and inhuman way of viewing this tragic event in iran, by some out there. These are quotes from the letters section of USA Today (December 30):

IRAN IS NOT WORTHY OF U.S. SUPPORT: President Bush has announced plans to send aid to earthquake-stricken iran. Translation: he wants to tax you and me to support the worst terrorists on earth. This is the same country that took american diplomats hostage. This is the same country that, ever eager to drag the whole world back into the dark ages, issues death sentences on writers and dissidents. Is there any greater moral obscenity than that? If Bush had any backbone, he would bomb Iran's terrorist government out of existence. It has been waging war on the U.S. for decades.

REMEMBER REACTION TO THE SEPTEMBER EVENTS: Yes, the earthquake is a tragedy for the people of Iran, just as 9/11 was a tragedy for us in America. But if my memory serves me right, Iranians were giving candy to children in celebration of the terrorist attacks on the US and holding signs with anti-U.S. slogans.  I and other Americans believe it is the duty of the media to advocate no aid to these people. The funds could be more wisely spent on the millions of americans who are homeless because of money and jobs going to countries that publicly celebrate and contribute to tragedies here in the U.S. >>> See reply
