* Community participation in Iran: Washington lecture
Community participation has been one of the key successes of the Islamic
Republic of Iran's (IRI) government. In fact, Iran has a long rich tradition
of community participation, a model of which can be found in the form of
traditional community-based organizations (CBOs). The traditional community-based
organizations of Iran with their strong roots in the community and long
history of activities, can be characterized as Iran's true NGOs.
The past twenty years have provided fertile ground for the growth and
development of these organizations and they have taken on an active role
in administering relief and charity efforts. In fact, they provide a strong
and remarkable safety net for vulnerable populations. The ideological basis
for the existence of these organizations is rooted in Iranian and Islamic
traditions of giving and charity work. These organizations hold great promise
as potential partners in development efforts, unfortunately, their great
potentials have been neglected by the State, by researchers, and by international
organizations and by the new and modern NGOs.
Sussan Tahmasebi will provide a background on Iranian NGOs (both modern
and traditonal) and examine innovative strategies adopted by the traditional
community-based organizations, their spontaneous move toward addressing
root causes of social problems, and their potentials as partners in development
efforts with government and international development bodies.
Date/Time: May 9th, 12:00pm-1:00pm
Location: Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.
