To top * Lecture: Responding to the Backlash, New York Mehdi Bozorgmehr, Ph.D., Director, and Anny Bakalian, Ph.D., Associate Director, Middle East and Middle Eastern American Center at the Graduate Center, CUNY, present the results of their research into the role that Middle Eastern, South Asian, and American organizations have played in responding to, coping with, and averting the backlash against Middle Easterners and South Asians as a result of the September 11, 2001, tragedies. Their research is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation. To top * Art: Shirin Neshat events SHIRIN NESHAT June 13àSeptember 8 Galleries 1, 2, 3 Shirin Neshat is one of a growing crop of contemporary, international artists whose work crosses boundaries of nationality, culture, and artistic medium. Born in Qazvin, Iran, Neshat immigrated to the United States at the age of sixteen to attend the University of California. After twelve years she returned to Iran for the first of several visits and found the country transformed by the Islamic Revolution. Her resulting sense of displacement and exile sparked the creativity from which the pieces in this exhibition arose. Using photography and video, Neshat has produced a body of work that investigates the cultural conflicts resulting from the collision of tradition and modernity in the East and West. Organized by the Musée dÇart contemporain de Montréal, this presentation is NeshatÇs first major solo exhibition in the United States and features six of her acclaimed video-and-sound installations and a body of related photographic work. Neshat turned to the media of photography and video in an attempt to investigate the role of women and feminism in Islamic society as well as her own status as a self-imposed artist in exile. She considers herself a "passionate inquirer" who "prefers raising questions as opposed to answering them," and her timely and open meditations have solidified her reputation as a cultural cartographer of the spaces where opposites intersect and seemingly stable boundaries collapse. In her trilogy of dual projection installations, Turbulent (1998), Rapture (1999), and Fervor (2000), Neshat examines gender roles in Islamic society. Each screen is occupied by actors of one sex, but the characters interact across the boundaries of the projection, listening, looking, and sometimes waving to each other. The viewer, seated within these installations, shares their meeting place. In addition to these works, Soliloquy (1999), from the WalkerÇs permanent collection, is a reflection on loss, memory, and dislocation. The dual projections of this installation present the artist herself in both the West (filmed in Albany, New York) and the East (filmed in Mardin, Turkey) simultaneously. Pulse (2001) offers a glimpse of the complex interweavings underlying an apparently innocuous situation in which two voices seem to communicate while in Passage (2001), Neshat reflects on nature and culture and the meaning assigned to life and death. In all of these works, the artist engages in an inquiring but ultimately humanistic investigation into the conflicted nature of contemporary identity in an increasingly globalized world. In NeshatÇs own words, she engaged in "universal dialogues while keeping within the specificity of the Islamic culture." The Muslim Scholarship Fund seeks to cultivate student interest in the designated fields at the pre-collegiate and collegiate levels, and to contribute to the emergence of exceptional young professionals in the relevant career domains. The Fund provides annual "Progressive Muslim Scholarship" awards to needing students based on merit. Deedaar is a project created by a group of friends in one of the Iranian Communities in San Francisco, Bay Area where we intend to hold informal and "khodemooni" gatherings about once every few months for 2 main reasons: The gathering itself! Just to enjoy being with each other and to charge up our batteries with the wonderful energies of "eshgh-o-safaa"! Sharareh Tajbakhsh To top * Farsi speakers: Cultural liason, Washington DC Friends, As many of you may know, the Smithsonian Annual Folk Life Festival on the Mall this year focuses on the Silk Road and is in need of Farsi speakers to act as Cultural Liaisons. The Festival runs late June/early July in Washington, DC. According to the attached description, the Cultural Liaisons' primary focus is to serve as a liaison between the Festival staff and the artists who have been flown in from abroad. Since Cultural Liaisons are supposed to live at the hotel which houses the artists and be with them throughout the day, this is an opportunity that is most suitable for someone who is in between jobs/consulting assignments, retired, or eschews full-time work for volunteer work. Cultural Liaisons do receive a modest stipend. I am told that there is a critical shortage of Farsi speakers to act as Cultural Liaisons for this important event.
