Iran’s Oldest Pizza Place

Hardly anyone knows of Davood’s. Located in an alley, Davood’s doesn’t have advertising, or even a sign (which speaks for the Iranian business sense). On “Lou’laa’gar”, an alley off of “Neauphle-le-Château”, Davood’s is near the city center of Tehran. It’s also two blocks away from the Italian embassy; a mere coincidence however.

Davood’s is small with very little seating. There are four choices on the menu; they are “essentially the same pizza” according to an employee. Each pizza is 12,000 Tomans (5/15/2014), or $4.

The interior is old looking, in a good way. There a sign that reads “No Bullshitting”, among other interesting decorations.

After ordering, a tinfoil wrapper full of chopped-up sausages is presented. A minute or so later, pizza arrives. Far from “American style”, the pizza is small, has ketchup as sauce, and is layered.

The pizza isn’t special by any means; it’s pizza, certainly not worth going across town for, had it not been the experience. What makes Davood’s is the presentation. The tinfoil wrapped food, the crampdness, the neighborhood, it all makes the trip worthwhile.

Davood’s reminds you of old Tehran. The enviornment, people, even the seebeel koloft man preparing pizza is what gives Davood’s its charm.
