Iran-U.S.
Map of failed U.S. embassy rescue mission in April 1980:

USS NIMITZ:
Arabian Sea, off the southeast coast of Iran. Eight helicopters were to take off from the deck of the U.S. aircraft carrier Nimitz for a 600-mile trip to rendezvous in the Iranian desert with six transport aircraft.

helocopters 1&2:
Desert of southeast Iran. One of the helicopters is forced down by rotor blade trouble and a second, its pilot blinded by a sandstorm, returned to the Nimitz.

helocopters 3-8:
Desert One, a undisclosed desert spot several hundred miles southeast of Tehran. Here, the remaining six helicopters rendezvous with six transport planes, but another chopper is deemed inoperable. The mission is aborted because at least six helicopters are needed. During refueling in the continuing sandstorm, three more helicopters break down. One of these crashes into a transport carrier and both explode into flames. Eight servicemen are killed. The remaining troops and operable craft fly home, leaving the burning wreckage -- with bodies, weapons, maps and secret data -- behind.

Desert 1:

Desert One, an undisclosed desert spot several hundred miles southeast of Tehran. The helicopters and transport craft were to rendezvous here. After joining together, the raiders and helicopters were to fly to Desert Two, leaving transport craft behind.

On the way back, the freed hostages were to board transport planes for the final flight out of the country.

Desert 2:
Desert Two, an undisclosed desert spot about 50 miles outside of Tehran. Here, the raiders were to board trucks for a trip into Tehran.

Tehran:

Tehran, the capital of Iran. Raiders, working with several locals recruited by the CIA, were to storm the embassy, free the hostages and summon the helicopters that would take hostages and their rescuers to the transport planes waiting at Desert One.
