Life in diaspora

There are those who are away from home
Yearn to return, but cannot
They've lost their homes
Their first language
Their familiar environment
Marooned and far away
They have had to
Quickly,
Adjust to their new land
Learn a new language
Make new homes
Separated from family and friends
They have made new connections
Across racial and cultural barriers
They are always homesick
For the place where they were born
They will always have their memories
Attachments to their past
But immersing themselves into a new world
Realigning the past with the present
They have learned to move on
To start afresh
To adapt
They are our fathers and mothers
