April 6, 2005 Ask Tourang a technical question Satellite images When I was at school, having a book of maps with different parts of the Earth was interesting but I could not wait until I got my hands on a spherical Globe. It was when I finally bought a Globe that I realized how
the
continents, oceans and even mountain ranges were inter-connected.
Soon after, however, my Globe turned into a soccer ball, and was
kicked around the house until my brother's foot poked a hole in it I guess the problem was that I could not find our house or even our street on the Globe and certainly I could not see my neighbors. Now all of that is getting to be possible, although we are not quite there yet. One of the companies that has been collecting sattelite images from all over the world is called "Keyhole". Last year Google bought them out and they are now offering images from every corner of the world to the consumers. Once you download their application, you will have the power to zoom in as close as possible and even get down to seeing streets and buildings in Manhatan or Shanghai. Wouldn't it be nice if you could zoom into Isfahan, let's say, take a good look at Menar Jonban, zoom out, and again zoom into Shiraz's Takhte-Jamshid and watch it from all different angles? Not all this imagery is there yet but they are adding to the images everyday. This service is inexpensive but it's offered to subscribers only. There is also a 7-day free trial version of Keyhole: www.keyhole.com One word of caution: the sattelite imagery depending on the location might be 2 or 3 years old and not all locations on Earth are covered, yet! Try it. You might enjoy it. Email your computer questions (all kinds of questions are welcome -- even personal ones, not!) About Tourang Birangi * *
