Not about Khatami
All about the younger citizens who are prepared to take a
stand
By Mehrdad Emadi-Moghadam
June 29, 1999
The Iranian
I think as Iranians, we owe this to ourselves to raise the profile of
what is happening in Iran. We do not need to be in agreement with President
Khatami and his government. This is not about him! The appeal is on behalf
of many Iranians who during my nine days in Iran kept asking me, "Why
is it that nobody in the West takes our struggle seriously and help us?"
Help for them did not mean sending troops. Or intervening in their struggle
against the so-called conservatives. I think it was more like why there
is so little said about what we have achieved and trying to?
I believe that Iran today is similar to Spain in the last few years
of Franco and Greece under the colonels. The outcome is not certain but
there are many encouraging signs that after all these years, we may earn
the right to live in a democratic society ... GO TO FEATURE

* Common root
Arman Sepehri writes:
I enjoyed the great humor and true points of view in the article "Khiyaar
Chambar".
Just to help the writer find the rest of the 100 words, here are some
other examples like "bad" for 'bad", "no" for
"new", "nah" for "no" and "behtar"
for "better" and what about "abroo" for "eyebrow"?
However, the reality is, most of these similarities are due to a common
root rather than words being adopted from this to that language. A good
example is the verb "ast" (or hast) in Farsi which is "ist"
in German, "est" in French, "es" in Spanish and "is"
in English.
Indeed from linguistic point of view, there are seven or eight main
branches of Indo-European languages where Persian is one of the main branches
and English is a sub-branch of German.
* Az cheh guri... ?
B. Mortazavi writes: Regarding
your article "I
must be a Jew" ... What a bunch of nonsense! az cheh guri did
you guys crawl out of? The title of your article should have been "I
MUST BE AN IDIOT".
* Conference: Iranian Americans as minorities
This is to inform you that on Thursday, July 1st, there will be a hearing
before the Small Business Economic Vitality and Consumer Services Committee
regarding the ordinance to provide inclusion of Iranian Americans as recognized
minorities.
It is required that some 30 people show up in this hearing. Not everyone
will need to speak, but we need to present about six cases of discrimination
against Iranians, preferably related to work or getting contracts ... DETAILS

The Legend of the Persian Carpet
By Tomie De Paola
Children who've been told of the diamond's legendary hardness may question
the ease with which this one is shattered. A king, accustomed to dwelling
in a light-filled room where a large diamond creates a million rainbows,
is bereft when it's stolen and smashed, and thereafter takes his only pleasure
in staring at the fragments, away from the subjects who need him. An apprentice
weaver comes up with the idea of making a magnificent carpet that will
lure the king back to his duties. It works. But, unfortunately, neither
the words nor the art here convincingly suggests the lure of the diamond's
prismatic play or the carpet's intricate patterns. Readers will have to
take these on faith. Still, Ewart's illustrations are prettily evocative
of old Persia, and perhaps the tale will pique interest in this ancient
art form ... GO TO BOOK
