The Iranian

- Turn up the volume.
- Why? It's just the news.
- Turn it UP, please! I want to hear the results of the Israeli elections.
- ...
- God I'm so glad Netanyahu lost... he's such a jerk.
- You think a new "moderate" prime minister is going to change things?
- It might... I hope so.
- I don't know... Those Jews won't let us live in peace.
- ... ? Those Jews? What are you talking about? This is the Israeli government. You are expanding it to include ALL Jews?
- I'm talking about the Jewish State. The Jewish State is made up of Jews.
- Hmmm... well, let me tell you something: I'm a Jew too. ... GO TO FEATURE

Forcing women to wear or take off scarf is wrong - Turkish MP

By Sima Zand

LONDON, May 17 (BBC Persian Service) - Merve Kavakci, the Turkish MP who casued an uproar after she showed up in the parliament hall with her Islamic-style head scarf, said she would fight for her constitutional rights even though her election has been nullified because of her dual Turkish-American citizenship.

In an interview with the BBC Persian Service, she also rejected the support she has received from some Iranian women because she said Iran is just as wrong in forcing women to wear the hijab as Turkey is in forcing them to remove it ... LISTEN HERE

* One of many reflections

Nader Pakdaman writes: Babak jan, I read your note, and understand your perspective. I do differ with your conclusions, although I think you are correct in many of your observations. The Iranian is not a reflection of Iran - or Iranians that have exclusively kept their links (cultural, or other) to the country. The Iranian, whether by design or by default, has become a representative of the new Iranian-American. Most, if not all, of the authors you mention have been either born or raised here in the U.S. They associate closely with the Iranian culture, its dichotomies and through that association critique/comment the culture from their perspective.

To judge them as qarb-zadeh is not correct (if not overtly simplistic), they are qarbi - and if anything Iran-zadeh. And, this is not a bad thing - it is the reality of over a million people who are as American as the Irish who migrated a century ago to this country ... FULL TEXT

* Biggest crook of all

Hamid Boroumand writes: I wish that 20/20 ["Aaberoo reezi"] had done a piece on the biggest fraud of all: The Bonyad Mostazafan and Janbazan and Iran's (if not the world's) #1 crook: Mohsen Rafighdoost.

* Iran's black-eyed beauties

David Mir writes: The author Cyrus Raafat is a bold and courageous gentleman ["Real Iranian girls?"]! He seems to have the balls to do what he knows is good and righteous...

I can totally agree with the brother and think that all these blamer-complainers out here just can't be too sweet! The fact is, if you want something pure...go to it's source: real black-eyed beauties are found nowhere else, except in good Iran! ... FULL TEXT

    1001 Persian-English Proverbs
    By Simin Habibian

    A cultural gap is growing between Iranian adults and youth residing outside of Iran. Young Iranians are strongly influenced by Western culture, while the adults struggle with Western culture and try to maintain their homeland's traditions. A bridge is needed to overcome the gap.

    Simin Habibian compiled "1001 Persian-English Proverbs" with this in mind ... GO TO BOOK

Iranian architecht's designs could help rebuild Kosovo

WASHINGTON, May 18 (Reuters) - Advocates of an innovative building method say Kosovo's refugees, when they eventually return home, can use it to transform the tools of war -- sandbags and barbed wire -- into the foundations of peace. The technique known as ``Superadobe'' is the brain-child of Nader Khalili, an Iranian-born architect working in the high desert of southern California, who for eight years has been building comfortable, durable homes from sandbags, barbed wire and earth ...
