Identity

American? Yeah right
Being born in America is not enough
By Mariam Hosseini
October 22, 1999
The Iranian
A couple of days ago, I was talking to a friend about Iran, and he asked
me how old I was when I had moved to the United States. I explained to
him that I was born and raised in California. He looked surprised and confused.
"Then you're not Iranian," he told me. "You're American."
He then began to lecture me on how I should be a proud American; after
all, I was betraying my patriotic duty to my country by supporting Iran.
"Ay baba," I thought, "Give me a break already." Once
again, I found myself immersed in an argument about nationality...
Being born in America is no excuse. I was born in the United States,
but so what? I speak Persian at home, I eat Iranian food, I watch Iranian
films, and I cried tears of joy when our soccer team won the game that
mattered the most ... GO

Eclipse

Moon kissed
Searching for the total eclipse
By Mansi Saboori
October 20, 1999
The Iranian
I was one of the lucky few. I don't know if I will be able to see another
one in Iran during my lifetime, for the next total eclipse will happen
35 years from now, on March of 2034. I was also lucky to be in a country
where the probability of seeing the eclipse was over 90%. I filmed this
historical event with a group of Iranian filmmakers and friends. At that
time in Tehran, people and the press were mostly engaged in the student
demonstrations, unrest, and political ramifications of the events followed
by the crackdown. However, I soon found out that so many others who were
much too busy with their everyday life struggles, including dealing with
the high prices of food, goods, and other necessities, and could not pay
much attention to the political crisis ... GO

Disillusioned
Instability has undermined our value-systems
By Mehrdad Emadi-Moghadam
October 19, 1999
The Iranian
At a personal level, we know that being dishonest and corrupt are not
attributes in which we can claim credit. Privately, most of us admire the
positive value of these characteristics and like to be affiliated with
them. As a nation, there is nothing intrinsic to make us less hard working
than Spaniards, Italians, the French, and yes even Germans and Japanese.
However, it is the value-system in which we are brought up and the continuous
inconsistency between what we are taught as proper behavior and the behavior
that is rewarded and perceived as success which have induced us to behave
in the manner for which we deserve some criticism ... GO TO FEATURE

Reconstructing dreams
Designs by A. Reza Rowhani

The Iranian
A. Reza Rowhani's art is electrifying. He cuts and alters images of
what would ordinarily be considered desirable, sexy, tastey or just plain
good. But the result is not sad or cynical as such. There's an immense
amount of vitality and confidence in his work. Hopes and dreams are alive,
only their meanings have changed ... GO
