What if the celebrations of Noruz and, say, Ashura coincided in a providential
year? What if the solar cycle of life concurred with the lunar one, the
sun-struck with the lunatic? What would happen if hot and cold came to
mix on a social scale?...
MAJLES NAMEH's story is straightforward. The king has died. There is
a struggle between his two sons to take his seat. The older son naturally
stands to inherit the throne, and the younger has his eyes on the prize.
The court is divided. The many wives of the respective heirs are alternately
jubilant and aggrieved, showing their emotional state by wearing colorful
and dark colors respectively. The wives of the older son want to celebrate
their imminent rise in status, while the wives of the younger are unhappy
about the status quo >>>

Imagine being told that you have to go to school on a lazy Saturday
morning! The sheer drudgery! Well ,that is where things are different at
Rustam. The students and teachers work together to create a perfect, friendly
environment for work. It is unthinkable for them to be somewhere else that
day of the week! It is quite common to spend the whole week planning and
thinking about what is going to happen next Saturday >>>

The Iranian
In the past week Iran has stopped about a dozen ships allegedly carrying
smuggled Iraqi oil. Meanwhile U.S. Secretary of State William Cohen has
visited regional capitals, warning American allies of the continued threats
posed by Iran, even though Washington is litself looking to improve ties
with an increasingly democratic Iran. And finally, for the first time in
20 years, Iran's defense minister is planning to visit Saudi Arabia. The
following essay was written for the International Commission for Security
and Cooperation in West Asia (Comprising Bahrain, Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Oman,
Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen) held in Istanbul,
Turkey last month >>>

I don't remember when or how I found Ladan Moaddeli's paintings. I had
saved her Web site in my files, waiting to feature her work on just the
right day. Beautiful, aren't they. I think "Earth"
and "Blue" (above) are my favorite >>>
