The donkey's gone!
A Rumi story
June 7, 2000
The Iranian
From "The Donkey's Gone! The Donkey's Gone!", one of the
stories in Rumi Stories for Young Adults from the Mathnawi, translated
and adapted by Muhammad Nur Abdus Salam. Illustrations by Rose Ghajar (2000,
ABC International Group).
Once there was a poor Sufi. He had a donkey which he would ride on in
his travels from one place to another. During the day he would travel about
as was his custom and at night, if he should come upon a house of dervishes
or an inn, he would spend the night in their company. If he did not find
such a place, he would sleep in a mosque or in some ruins. He used to say
to himself, "Wherever night falls, there is my bed." >>> GO

Soccer Boosts Iran-Egypt Ties
By AFSHIN VALINEJAD
Associated Press Writer
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Egypt narrowly beat Iran in a penalty shootout Wednesday,
but diplomacy was said to be the real victor in the first soccer match
between the two nations. ``Winning or losing is a secondary issue in these
tournaments. They are more of a bridge between us and the participating
countries for the expansion of friendly ties,'' said Mohammad Ghaffari,
an Iranian soccer federation official, before the game. ``We hope that
football will serve as a means to improve political relations among us.''

Obituary: Houshang Golshiri
By Justin Huggler
The Independent (London)
June 7, 2000
HOUSHANG GOLSHIRI was a dissident all his life. He was a writer who
eschewed the ivory towers and dared to challenge Iran's political leaders:
as a result he was persecuted both under the Shah and under the Islamic
Republic. Yet he never stopped insisting on the right to freedom of expression.

Iran back as king of chess castle
By GUY DINMORE
Financial Times (London)
June 7, 2000
From Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas to Iran, chess is coming home. Fide,
the world chess federation, this week wrapped up an agreement with the
Iranian government to host the world championship final in Tehran in December.
Iran's chess association, locked in a prolonged struggle with a few
conservative Shia Muslim ayatollahs opposed to the game, is overjoyed that
it beat off rival bids from China, Kazakhstan and Morocco >>>

* Afghans are human like us
Ali Khaligh writes:
Please be informed that just the photos of the Afghan refugees were
by me and not the introduction ["Not
welcome"]. I'm a photojournalist, I like social subjects. My main
purpose in choosing this subject was to help the Afghan refugees by showing
their pains to people all over the world.
I have no problem with the Iranian government and I live in Iran and
I'm happy about it . But I have seen the pains of these refugees and their
poor life and it is my job to reflect it. Afghan refugees are humans like
us. Nobody has shown their life in Iran but I wanted to >>>

* Persians should care for themselves first
Mehran Mirshahi writes:
Let's not get to carried away with the treatment of Afghans in Iran
["Not
welcome"]. Iran has been one of the most hospitable countries
in the world, accepting the largest number of refugees anywhere in the
world in the last decade. This is despite the internal, external, and economic
problems that we are all familiar with.
Therefore, comparisons with Germany are a little out of place. Out of
the millions of Afghans who have been accepted withing Iranian society,
a few hundred, possibly thousands, are being returned due to unlawful entry.
These people make good subjects for Ali Khalighs' photographs, although
such scenery is not uncommon across, Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Turkey

Translation of today's poem by Zara
Houshmand:
There's talk in the halls of love's seminary
Of the line between love's pleasure and its theory.
On love, no theologian's expert ruling will abide.
On love, their eminences' tongues are truly tied.
