Long way to go
Minority status and discrimination
By Poopak Taati
June 9, 2000
The Iranian
Many of us have asked ourselves questions such as how could Iranians
living in the U.S. organize a lobbying force? Or how could they fight discrimination?
These questions have a tendency to bypass the essential analysis of whether
such organizations are needed at all. Should we have an anti-discrimination
organization simply because every other ethnic group has established one?
Is there a need for us to have a lobbying organization? If so, why? What
could we accomplish with such organizations? >>>

Iranian Radicalism Said to Be Waning As Reform Spreads
By Howard Schneider
Washington Pos
June 9, 2000
CAIRO Although the U.S. government still regards it as the
world's "most active state sponsor of terrorism," Iran appears
to have moderated its radical behavior in the last three years as its domestic
reform movement has grown increasingly influential.
Evidence is accumulating that official tolerance and backing for terrorist
activities abroad have been waning since the 1997 election of reformist
President Mohammed Khatemi, according to Western diplomats and other analysts

* Disloyal to a loyal servant
F. Rafat writes: I
wonder how Mrs. Pahlavi can justify her husband's disloyalty to his most
favorite and loyal servant ["The
fall guy"]. Did he feel that Hoveyda was also endangering the
country like Dr. Mossadegh or jailed him so that he may save himself by
sacrificing those who served him?
By the way, would it not have been better if the Shah had stayed in
the country trying to save his regime? He knew he was going to die soon
so what better than staying on? And even if he had been killed by the revolutionaries,
he would have been a martyr in the eyes of his people? Was he too scared?
* Ashamed
Mani Shahrokni writes:
I am ashamed at the way Iran treated and repatriated these poor Afghanis
["Not
welcome"]. Most of them had come to Iran as war refugees, worked
hard in the construction industry to feed their families and survive in
camps. I myself am an Iranian with a refugee background, and I am very
sensitive to this issue.
These people will probably face enormous problems back home in Afghanistan.
They are going to a country still at war. I know Iran is facing an extremely
tough economic situation, but treating these people this way is not going
to help Iran's economy or image.
One more thing: there are an estimated one million Iranian refugees
in Turkey.

Translation of today's poem by Zara
Houshmand:
When we're together, her face is my smiling flower;
When we're apart, it's the faith I hold in my heart.
My heart and I are at war together over her,
My heart and I each claim her as my idol.
