Judge said to issue verdict in spy case
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - A judge doubling as prosecutor in a spy trial whose
fairness has been questioned will issue a verdict in the case next week,
a court official said Friday. Judge Sateq Nourani will issue a verdict

Jailed professor given leave to prepare exams
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- A prominent journalist and university professor
jailed on charges of insulting Islam and inciting dissent has been allowed
a short leave to prepare exams, his family said Wednesday. Latif Safari,
a Tehran University professor and director of the now-banned Neshat daily,
was given six days leave after university officials appealed to the judiciary

Son denies Tehrani's suicide attempt
The son of Sheikh Ali Tehrani has issued a statement denying a report
that his father had committed suicide. Bahar newspaper in Iran reported
that the dissident cleric had tried to kill himself by swallowing dozens
of pills. Mahmoud Tehrani, who lives in Paris, described the report as

No death penalty for accused spies

Khatami protested against silencing papers: report
TEHRAN, June 22 (AFP) - President Mohammad Khatami protested to the
chief of the conservative-dominated judicial system last month against
the wave of closures of pro-reform newspapers, the Iranian press reported

Feminist women free on bail
TEHRAN, June 21 (AFP) - Two Iranian feminists arrested and detained
for having attended an "anti-Islamic" seminar in Berlin in April

Former Tehran riot squad chief faces arrest over student unrest

Reformers urge rights respect

judiciary Sunday that its ``illegal behavior'' toward the press has damaged
