More than your enemies

by Jahanshah Javid on

"Sir, you have wrestled well and overthrown
More than your enemies."

That's one of my favorite sayings form Shakespeare. It applies not only to the Shah, but all dictators past and present, who are so sensitive to criticism, so paranoid, so unwilling to share power that they attack and suppress not just enemies but also anyone who simply disagrees.

In the case of the Shah, all who opposed him were accused of either being puppets of the Soviet Union or the British or some unspecified generic foreign hand.

In the case of Khamenei, all opponents/critics are paid or instigated by the U.S., UK, or Israel and categorized simply as "doshmanaan", which can be interpreted to include anyone who simply questions.

To dictators, the only true, good, citizen is one who obeys.
