Asghar Farhadi

Shakes Isabella Rossellini's hand and mentions imprisoned director Jafar Panahi

mubi.com: What a night for Asghar Farhadi's "Nader and Simin, a Separation". Not only has the International Jury of this year's Berlinale, presided over by Isabella Rossellini, awarded the film the Golden Bear, but, in a most unusual move, the jury's also decided to give the Silver Bear for Best Actor and Silver Bear for Best Actress to the male and femaie ensembles, respectively. Actress Sarina Farhadi thanked all those in Iran who've stood in hours for tickets to see the film — which, we might as well go ahead and mention, has also picked up the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury for best film in the Competition >>>

Clothing criticisms

by comments on

I agree with clothing criticisms.  If one doesn’t want to wear tie to be formal, he has to wear a polo neck, and not a turtleneck.  He has to overdo his hair and facials.  Also, that would be nice to use a product preventing the tip of his nose to be pale that is usually the case for addicts.

Though with such restrictions in Iran and minimum exposure to the real world he has to be proud of himself.  Again, everybody doesn't have to be as stupid as Shahid Fahmideh.  One's life is important and you don't have to danger yourself to challenge the government.

A polo neck shirt with a well-tailored suit is as appropriate as a tie and shirt. He should have gone for the air kiss and cuddle with that gorgeous female  presenter. That would have sent the Mullas into a fit of rage!

Majidi, Asgarpur, Mirkarimi, Heidarian pay a visit to Qom

by Darius Kadivar on

A group of Iranian cineastes visited Ayatollah Abdollah Javadi Amoli in his office in Qom on Wednesday. The group included Majid Majidi, Reza Mirkarimki, Mohammad-Mehdi Asgarpur, Mohammad-Mehdi Heidarian, Mohammad Davudi and several other cineastes, Persian press reported on Thursday. Ayatollah Javadi Amoli asked the cineastes to discard the terms of 'play' and 'acting' from the art literature.

Absolutely agree. I feel ambivalent when Iranian film makers win an award on the international stage. I am happy that Iranian talent is recognised on the international stage but then the finance is coming directly from the IR and makes the regime more acceptable or mainstream to the West. This may not be the filmmakers intention but the IR is indirectly benefiting from their achievements in the same way as governments benefits from tax reveunue obtained from cigarette sales.

Like Darius said, the filmmakers really do need to take a stand and make an unambiguous statement against the regime.

You are both right. This Islamic an tellectual BS is not a part of Iran. Why are people so much trying to hide Iranian real heritage. Islam is not a part of us. It is a parasite attached to us.

I do not even care about a tie. How about just wearing human clothes. Instead of Tazi Hibollah saveges. We don't need to pretend to be Muslims.

Congratulations and a well done all.

In the dark days and the the times that the nation is struggling and fighting for their very basic rights  under such evil regime any news like this is important and somehow vital.

I'm not a nationalist however I do respect any body who makes their nation proud and happy.

People like Jafar Panahi and you are credits to the country.

Congrats But for once I partially agree with Simorgh5555

by Darius Kadivar on

Farhadi and Kiarostami have always sent mixed signals as to where they stand in regard to the Iranian regime. At best they have been politically correct.

On the other hand the works of both of these excellent directors are not particularly politically tainted but rather social and moral ( not to say at times "moralist") tales.

But then who can today claim to work or analyze Iranian society even from a purely creative standpoint without having a political outlook on what is going on in the country.

It would have been far more brave had the women come without the Roosary and had Farhadi made a Very Firm and Unambiguous statement against the Regime which is oppressing the people including their fellow colleagues in IRan.

Wanting to define the current crisis in Iran as some other Islamic Intellectuals like the Sadri Brothers or Hamid Dabashi try to present it as some kind of civil rights movement is absurd.

I fully understand that they wish to return to IRan and work there and as such their decision should be respected and is respectful in it's own right.

But Bahman Ghobadi, Mohsen Makhmalbaf and many other famed names have chosen exile not because they like it but in order to be much more vocal in denouncing what is going on in Iran.

Colin Firth Presents Bahman Ghobadi's powerful film

BECAUSE SHE TOO HAS A VOICE: Colin Firth Speaks Up For Sakineh M. Ashtiani

There is clearly a drift appearing within the Iranian Film and Arts Community as to how to publicly respond to the IRanian regime.

Golshifteh Farahani's use of "Allah o Akbar" in her latest song is also another ambiguous message.

All I can say to their credit is that unlike Asghar Farhadi who is old enough to remember Iran prior to the Revolution, the actors and actress who are playing in this film are born into the Islamic Republic and have known no other era or lifestyle with which they feel entirely comfortable with than the Islamic one.

As such we should not judge them abruptly.

Congratulation to Asghar Farhadi for the Award as well as his excellent, and talented cast particularly the female leads who are breathtakingly beautiful even with their scarfs:

Why the Hezbollah outfits?

by Simorgh5555 on

Does it hurt to wear a tie and shirt at a film ceremony? And please don't give me the lame excuse they dress like that because they fearbeing labeled a taghooti when they return to Iran.

You are representing your country. For F sakes remove the ugly hijab and dress up for the occasion on an international stage.
