Re rituals/culture

by Arj on

DNSM, this has nothing to do with Western culture or American political correctness, but it rather is a matter of civility. Try to do this in a busy street of Tehran or at a respectable wedding hall, and see what kind of reaction you'll get -- for donations are made through slaughter houses who carry out the sacrifice process! However, this has more to do with pastoral/nomadic tribal rituals than culture, for Isfahan is near Charmahal-o Bakhtiari province where nomadic tribes cross through -- as they do in Khuzestan, Lorestan, Ardabil...

Moreover, one can not compare a natural process which is childbirth to slaying of an animal! Otherwise, where do you draw the line? If exposing children to slaughter of animals could boost their compassin for animals, then exposing them to public hangings should bring out empathy for fellow humans in them!

Mousa dear: I draw the line at the Dogs!

If an animal can't survive on its own, then perhaps it shouldn't. Tomorrow, if all the human beings die, almost all their cats will survive, and all their dogs will die.

No sir: you can play with my dog, but leave that pussy alone!

Cultural Traditions versus Animal Cruelty

by Truthseeker9 on

the usual defensive nonsense: "... don't insut my culture, ignore the cruelty, others do it, noones perfect, why bother to change and progress ... "

Culture is something that is taught and engrained into people from the time that they are born, a state of mind if you will that is passed down from generation to generation (as showing children here) - it is not an easy thing to weed out!

Anonymous Observer

A vegan's point of view

by Anonymous Observer on

As a vegan, I'm against all animal slaughter of any kind.  We can get by without eating meat.  Don't believe me, ask the Hindus.  That being said, I agree with TS-9 and Arj.  I don't expect people to give up eating meat.  That's just an unrealistic goal.  But, a couple of things need to be noted.  First, there is no need for ritualistic killing of animals for religious or cultural reasons, sych as the mass killings at Hajj. There is also no need for the animal to be slaughtered in front of impressionable children.  It installs in them a belief that gory violence in acceptable.

Second, industrial farming of animals need to be eliminated in favor of samll farms where living conditions are humane.  One of the states in the U.S. (Minnesota?) has a law that limits the number of cattle on any given farm, which effectively eliminates mass, industrialized farming of livestock.   That's a good model to follow.

Mr. Shazdeh asdola mirza: i find it sad these days.

by mousa67 on

As a child, I used to enjoy doing all kinds of things to the poor chickens which were kept  in my aunt Rosa's back yard. But now in my old reflective days I can not hurt an ant let alone perform those gastly acts on a chicken. You should see how pampered my Chiwawa puppies Hasan and Hosein are.

A ritual or evolves over hundreds of years. If you want to push American style "Political Correctness" on Iran you will fail. More than that you will be discredited along with any good ideas you have.

Personally I rather use my cards in banning the death penalty. Not changing a wedding practice which I do not even disagree with. I have another bit of news: the miracle of birth is mixed with blood. Have you ever seen it for real: I have.

And finally I very much prefer children to see reality. Then it is lot simpler to convince them of the need for kindness to animals. A sterile world without reality breeds to people without feelings.

The Jewish animal sacrifice is both funny and sad

by Shazde Asdola Mirza on

Every year, devout Jews around the world engage in an age-old ritual called Kapparot, in which an individual swings a chicken over his head imbuing it with his sins. The chicken is then slaughtered ...

I am afraid you do not know much about Iran and are making poor judgements. This is in fact done with the best of intentions in order to help people. In Iran historically the rich supported the poor by these so called "rituals" which:

  • Provide a very real way of feeding the hungry.
  • Allow people to share their good forture with others. When a good thing happens; depending on your means you make food and give it away.

Now all you could get off your high horse and back to earth. This practice is viewed as one of the most decent and human things to do in Iran. You people got to go back once in a while.

Re "breaking news"

by Arj on

DNSM, first of all, I don't like boats (make me sea-sick)! Secondly, if you paid attention to my point of contention before you jumped the gun, you'd see the emphasis is on mixing festivities with bloodshed!

Whether the meat is meant to be consumed immediately or for religious sacrifice, the slaughter does not have to take place in public with children or even passersby having to bear witness!

Veiled Prophet of Khorasan

This is BS

by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on

There is just as much cruelty to animals in the "West" as anywhere if not more. For example you are all worried about how Iranians kill sheep. Well how about the lives of animals right here?

Have you heard of intensive raising of animals. Chickens stacked up on top of each other in cages. Ducks force fed so they get fat livers for pate in France. How about non free range cattle and sheep so on. Don't get me started on boiling; worse broiling or the max eating live lobsters. I was at a Japanese restaurant where people were taking a lobster alive; chopping the tail it then eating it while the rest of it watched. How about that.

I know you all think you are coming across as civilized and superior. But I have news also that: you do not. The real message is that you are out of touch. You arr so lost in your attempt to be "western" you have lost touch. But since nobody in Iran gets IC it doe snot matter and saves you the embarrassment. I say: if an Iranian wants to kill a sheep and give the meat to needy people: more power to them and have a great wedding.

Arj and the rest, Hate to break the news to you but the Holy prophet Cyrus was not a vegetarian either.  Ya, Pretty much was the same back then as it is now.

As I said either be vegetarian or just
Stop Judging and Criticizing other people's culture. As a matter of fact these animals are being treated much better than the ones in the Western slaughterhouses.  Check out some Animal activists sites on the web to get an idea.

The problem with your FOBs is that you all think westerners are better. If they start washing their asses with Aftabeh then all of a sudden you all become the Afatabeh's die hard fans.

Barbarity the 21st century style!

by Arj on

It's hard to believe that a nation who boast the first declaration of HR in human history and 7000 years of civilization, seek good omen in mixing festivities with such a heinous act of bloodshed!

I doubt if this is Isfahan the city, but probably a provincial town like Shahreza, Mobarakeh or Najaf Abad -- where most of the IRI support comes from!

Thank you Fruitseeker!

You know, making commitments is not really a problem for me since I show up here regularly. That takes commitment.

My problem is that I don't like inflicting pain and suffering on myself, which is a normal human trait.

Good article though!

I'd love you to go to th Serengeti and ask the lioness to apologise for killing the zebra to feed her young. Did you read any of my comment? Humans should kill humanely for food.

Not all Iranians . . . blame .... blame....

by Mohammad Ala on

This action of sacrifice is not practiced among many Iranians including my family members and friends.  There are many inhumane ways of killing cows and pigs, e.g., by Iowa Beef Packaging company in the USA where 100s of animals are killed every day.  Go ahead blame, blame, blame…

Truthseeker9

...

by Truthseeker9 on

I'm against killing animals inhumanely for food, or for sport. But you can't tell people to go vegetarian. Even animals eat other animals, but humans should use their concience and slaughter humanely.

There is controversy around halaal meat in the UK, people are being served this without being told. I personally avoid any establishments serving it.

Common in Poor Countries. Iran is not an exception.

by Farfromheaven2002 on

It’s very difficult for people to understand that sheep also lives. Its heart bits, and it breathes and a sheep has a sense of analysis. It’s expected in a country that a life of human is less worthy and the meaning of respect is fabricated in an opposite way. People gain their information mainly through rumors and gossips; a major entertainment in Iran.

Does this clarrify the difference between humans who live in Iran and those in developed countries?

particularly prevalent among  rural folks in Iran .

The blade cutting through the poor animal's throat. , the merciless executioner hard at work , blood running everywhere , all in the presence of young children .........and the absurd jubilation going on!!! ....Utter Cruelty  surrounding  a couple who are hoping for a life of love and peace . This would  be banned in a civilized society!

Your criticism does not make sense either unless you are a vegetarian.
