Thank you to those who put this together.

Referring to the popular actors and signers of the time, in a published article in 1994, I wrote: “I think Fardin and Gogoosh – not to speak of the real cultural phenomena of the time, Sousan and Aghasi – were far more effective, enjoying a truly massive audience… In fact, Aghasi’s ‘Amena,’ and not Shari’ati’s ‘Fatima,’ was more appealing as a culturally encoded message.” At the time of the writing, I even didn’t know how entertaining this man had been for the men of his time and place. Having left Iran years before he reached his fame, I had only heard pits and pieces of his songs. What a culture! What a time in the history of the nation! My point in the 1994 article was that Islamic Republic and its ideology cannot be teleological constructed.

This was once again reminder of the early Iranian cinema that has led to the current golden films. I saw the same striped uniforms in Elvis' jailhouse rock film and had to leave a comment before Tavana came and made another stupid remark as to why 40 years ago we made films that people enjoyed.
