Hamid Dabashi's "The World of Persian Literary Humanism"

Harvard University Press (2012)

Book Description: What does it mean to be human? Humanism has mostly considered this question from a Western perspective. Through a detailed examination of a vast literary tradition, Hamid Dabashi asks that question anew, from a non-European point of view. The answers are fresh, provocative, and deeply transformative. This groundbreaking study of Persian humanism presents the unfolding of a tradition as the creative and subversive subconscious of Islamic civilization >>>

You're the one supporting sanctions & starving of Iranian people

by Zendanian on

to death, not me.

That is not a lable. It's a fact and a positon you defend in here day in and day out. Your just too obtuse to see and admit that sanctions are the introductory moves before a full scale war. Such non-recognition has something to do with your intellectual level, or lack of it. More likely the latter.

Komalah's Peshmerge force has been active for 33 years, and for 33 years IR thugs have tried to use the exact same obtuse distorted propaganda against us.

However the heroic people of Kurdestan know fully well what we mean, when we call uopn them for self-organiztion and dependence on our own resources through self-reliance.

Thus we have had two, not one but two, very successful General Strikes in Kurdestan.

We have also developed resources and our capacities for Komalah Radio and Television.

Komalah's clandestine network and organization throughout Kurdestan and Iran remains unparalleled.

All monarchists may suck on these most magnificant accomplishments.

Milani was an obtuse Maoist when he went to Iran, he became an obtuse monarchists after getting few slaps in the face in shah's jail, and now he's remains an obtuse neo-liberal so called "academician."

Shameless defenders and promoters of sanction and war on Iran (the pathetic monrachist ilke)  are the ones in need of forgiveness.

And as forgiving as Iranian people are, I for one, very much doubt any forgive and forget on that account.

Incoherence and incompetence belongs, to you & monarchist

by Zendanian on

Ilke.

Your equation of USSR with socialism is a further proof of just how ignorant you are, when it comes to Socialism. You and your cohorts are the ones forever stuck in that cold war mentality.

You don't have a word to say about Kurdestan, how it has withstood the onslaught of IR, and how it remains  a thorn in the side of IR.

If you had the vaguest clue you would have known that we have always  opposed USSR, and all other single party systems. But such an understanding is too complex for your simple minded brain.

Self-Organization and Self-Reliance is simply too alien and complex an idea, way beyond  your grasp.

All you pathetic monarchists can depend on is the "aid" of foriegners given to you from outside of Iran, but then even the foriegners know that your King wannabe is nothing but a bacheh naneh joke. No military attack on Iran for you.

You may suck on that.

Mash Ghasem,

As you well know, I am not a Monarchist, but I have to say that most Monarchists that I know are nice and educated people from good families and as we say in Iran, "sar-e-sofreh pedar o maadareshoon bozorg shodan", unlike Oghdeh-ei communists.

You guys were defeated and thrown out 2 decades ago and the funny thing is that the person that brought you guys down was a dimwit called Reagan, not the brightest light on the Christmas tree!

Zendanian

Iranian people need no "saviour," Only the bankrupt monarchists

by Zendanian on

have illusions and delusions of becoming the "saviours" through a King wannabe bacheh naneh.

As far as Komalah, it has so far organized two, -not one but two,- very successful General Strikes, based on the self-organization of the people, from bottom-up.

Kurdestan has been, is and will be the vanguard and examplar of Iranian people's SELF-ORGANIZATION, AND SELF-RELIANCE.

Monarchists may suck on that, till kingdom come

Possibly, the blueprint for this book by Dabashi

by Zendanian on

Mimesis: The Representation of Reality in Western Literature.

Whereas the scope of Mimesis is the entire Western literature, Dabashi seems to also have had a very ambitious historical range in mind.

More on Mimesis below:

"Mimesis is a series of twenty chapters, organized chronologically, each of which is a separate essay, capable of standing alone.  Each
essay begins with an extended passage [in the original followed by a
translation] from a work of the Judeo-Christian Graeco-Roman literary
tradition, which Auerbach then subjects to an intense linguistic,
literary, and philosophical analysis."

by masoudA on

I don't know how old you are - but I was in college at the time of the revolution and met many many of the likes of Dabashi.   They say if you are not a socialist into your twenties you don't have a heart and I agree with that......I understand how millions of our youth were fooled in 1978 and I don't blame them for that......but as you said there are those so called leftists who are still aiding the mullahs......I am sure you agree they are sub-humans correct?   Their intentions was never to help the masses, only themselves right?   Well, I am here to tell you - this fellow is also one of them - He just happens to be outside Iran, aiding the mullahs, and aiding those who brought the mullahs to power.   These guys are lobbying strongly against anyone in US Congress or Senate who dares to want to help the people of Iran.   I have been following activities of these folks for years.......they aided the Brzezinski-Soros-CFR-...et. al in 1978 and are still doing it today.

Here are a couple more of them.... don't miss the part on Soros Grant - and funny how they all teach "Middle Eastern Studies"....

Cultivating & Building a Culture of Tolerance and Understanding

by Zendanian on

Mosoud Khan: many Leftists in Iran also have had very serious problems with those calling themselves Left, yet aiding the mullahs. Almost all of those confused Leftists who did commit that horrendous mistake, paid the price and hopefully have learned  many lessons from it.

However today , for us Iranian, especially Iranians outside of Iran (Canda,UK,US,...) with access to social media we have a golden opportunity to not only help our brave, courageous political prisoners in Iran, but also establish a culture and norm of civilized, enlightened dialouge amongst ourselves. Especially amongst those with the most difference.

As far as Hamid is concerned, I have been a reader of his works for a few decades now, and I can never recall him calling himself a communist. Perhaps he might consider himself some kind of a progressive Leftists of Social Democratic type.

With all due respect for your opinion, I respectfuuly invite you to modify your statement on him; calling him a "sub-human." At some point all of us (including myself) need to learn to tolerate opposing views.

That's how we creat a true democracy.

And a true democracy is what we lack, and what we need.

Mokhles shoma.

Extremist professor is

by vildemose on

Extremist professor is also very oghdehi. He was freaking out at the success of Azar Nafisi. Nobody takes this zombie seriously. His ilk destroyed Iran and now they want to destroy the US too.

In a "Columbia Quiz" given randomly to students and other passersby on campus, Maloney uses a Dabashi quote to make a point about what passes for acceptable in academia today. Titled, "A Professor's Lesson in Tolerance and Civility," the clip features Maloney asking quiz takers to guess whether the following quote originated with "a) Adolph Hitler b) Osama bin Laden or c) a Columbia professor":

Who said of "Israeli Jews...the way they talk, walk, the way they greet each other, there is a vulgarity of character that is bone deep and structural to the skeletal vertebrae of its culture"?

The results are humorous, and yet also rather frightening. None of the quiz takers know off the bat that the quote belongs to Dabashi and one even tells Maloney that she suspects "this whole thing is designed to make me say a Columbia professor."
