I wanted to test this phpchat system to see if its something we want to adopt here at Iranian.com.

It's pretty simple (at least it seems so right now).

You have to be logged in with your Iranian.com user to see the empty chat box directly below this blog entry. You "connect" to the room using the little globe/lighting icon at the bottom of the main chat window, righ above the  [B] bold key.

Once inside you can chat with whoever else is there.

Some special commands can be given (no quotes when you actually type them in)

  • type "/join #ROOMNAME" to join a new room which shows up as a new tab in the window. There you can have a private chat with other people who are also in the room.
  • "/connect" to initially come in (just like pressing the globe button) and "/quit" to leave.
  • "/privmsg NAME MESSAGE" to send MESSAGE to username NAME privately. So that only the target user sees the message. If a name has more than one word use double quotes.

If this sounds familiar to some of you that's because this software is based on old-school IRC. It's hard to believe but chat technology was mature and popular over a decade before "blogging". I still remember using IRC on text-only terminals back in the day.

Anyway, if this works out, we can allow every blog to have an optional chat box as well. Maybe we can have private conversations or debates happen here instead. It is also a more intimate medium. There will be abuse, as there is with everything. I don't know how JJ wants to handle it, but we'll see how bad it gets first. I don't know if profanity should be any cause for penalty as much as things that physically prevent others from having a conversation. But it's up to JJ to make a "policy" be it written or not.

Speaking of abuse, we just changed the comment flagging system too. Any logged in user can flag comments (as before). For any comment that is flagged, the system asks for a "reason". The comment and the reason are placed in a queue for editors to review. The comment can be deleted or un-flagged. The flag status would be reflected at the bottom of the comment. This system also sends JJ an email for every comment flagged as abuse. The previous system had a number of technical glitches and problems. For example editors could flag a comment and it would "disappear" while in pending status. It could reappear if deemed OK, or it could be gone forever. Now it's never gone until an editor deletes it. And there's email tied to it.

I'll be back at 1PM Pacific so we can do some more chatting together. If possible please join me at that time, I would like to see if the system breaks with a lot of users. The more the better.

Goodbye for now

How to do private room chat with multiple people

by admin on

You can come up with a name like "#666" and tell everyone who you want to join the name of the room, but not to others.

You can enter the room by typing

/join #666

You can also invite others to join. Like if you wanted to invite me, you would type:

/invite admin #666

All of you will be in the new room together. Others an come in as well but only if they know the name of the room.

Thanks Foaad!

Khasteh nabaashi! I tried it and it works! I tried to break it, too, but I wasn't successful! I'm afraid your instructions for sending private messages (or using special commands) were not sufficiently descriptive for a lay person like me, so I failed in that department. I'm sure by the time you are ready for an official launch, you will have "idiot proof" instructions for me, too!

Though I personally don't like online chatting, I am glad to see this new feature. I know quite a number of people are on this site for social networking alone. Hopefully now they can move their aspirations to chatrooms and the dialogues in the comments sections will improve, too. I'm glad only registered users get to chat! Hopefully more people will register to take advantage of the feature.

Thanks again, Foaad! Who knows, maybe you will be invited to the celebrations which find their roots in the chatrooms! Or you may have to officiate them yourself! You're Da Man!

Before you know it...

by Ali P. on

People are going to create private chatrooms, and discuss 'adult' materials...

Rooms such as:

IRANdokht's dungeon,...Ebi's Erotica,... JJ's jeegars...DK's S&M...

Fine. I guess... ;-)

Fooad if there are "so many"

by Soo (not verified) on

Fooad if there are "so many" person to person conversations, why is JJ afraid that implementing/enforcing the moderation policy will reduce the quantity of comments?

See his comment below, last paragraph:

http://iranian.com/main/comment/reply/52447/12...

Why is the User Agreement for "decoration" only?! ;-)

Question

by zn (not verified) on

what if you want to be in the chat room to listen, but not to participate in the discussion, can you still be in the room as just a listener?

The problem is that there are so many person to person conversations that I'm not sure people want to have permanently preserved. For back and forth retorts or questions/answers I think chat is a better solution. Ideally this means higher quality regular comments.

Good News

This is really good news.  I hope I will have time to particiapate.

Moderation is really easy if

by Soo (not verified) on

Moderation is really easy if JJ is willing to stick to a policy and not worry about how it'll affect the quantity of comments. People will get used to a policy if they know they are required to follow a policy otherwise this is just another Irooni-bazi.

I am not interested in Chat anymore, as you said Fooad this was popular more than a decade ago. I think Iranian.com will be better served if people's comments stay written, not jabbed and lost in space in a chatroom.

To connect for a chat, click on the globe on the left above the bold B or type /connect.

This is just text chat, no voice

by admin on

IRCs could kick people out of a room or ban them from entering any room on the server. It's possible to moderate but even harder.

I don't think there is a built in limit of users.

IRANdokht

That's great

by IRANdokht on

Thanks Foaad

I can't imagine moderation on live chat. How would that work? will the rooms be monitored by the first person in? (like Paltalk?)

How many members in a chatroom?
