Slavery in Islam

Slavery, making one human the property of another, was widely practiced in the past by many societies. Regrettably, even in the 21st Century, the horrid practice continues in certain areas, most notably among Muslims. Islam’s genesis was the Arabian peninsula of the seventh century AD, known for its primitive beliefs and savage practices. So, it is of no surprise that Islam incorporated slavery and much of the ethos of the culture of its birthplace.

Is discussing slavery beating a dead horse? Regrettably, it is not. The Anti-Slavery Society has documented numerous contemporary instances, most of them from Islamic countries. The repugnant practice of slavery presents a real threat to human dignity as Islamic fundamentalism is surging. The Islamic law—the Shariah—is based on the provisions of the Quran.

And the Quran explicitly and implicitly condones slavery in dozens of suras (chapters). Muhammad himself took numerous slaves, mostly women, as spoils of war. Some of the women Muhammad took for himself he called concubines, hardly a consolation to the helpless enslaved women.

Documents show that in the heyday of slavery, Muslims took just as many slaves from East Africa as did the Christians from West Africa.

Slavery is a matter of degrees. On one extreme is the absolute right of the owner to do whatever he wishes to the slave. This form of slavery is no longer prevalent. Yet disenfranchising people from any provisions of the Charter of Human Rights constitutes a form of enslavement.

Slavery seamlessly became a part of Islam, since it was widely practiced by the Arabs. Slavery is repeatedly approved in the Quran. The Old Testament also sanctioned slavery. Yet, Jewish and Christian societies have long banned slavery while the Muslims consider every verse and word of the Quran as those of Allah that can never be revised, discarded or violated. Therefore, with the resurgence of Islam, more and more Islamic laws and ethos, including slavery of various types and degrees, are implemented. One clear validation of the practice of slavery is the sura below:

[Q 16.75] Allah sets forth a parable: (consider) a slave, the property of another, (who) has no power over anything, and one whom We have granted from ourselves a goodly sustenance so he spends from it secretly and openly; are the two alike? (All) praise is due to Allah!

Slavery, discrimination, exclusivity and many more unjust provisions are systemic to Islam without any possibility for reformation. Muslims revere the Quran as the eternal immutable words of Allah. They accept the Hadith, Muhammad’s sayings, as further elucidation of their faith and emulate the Sunna the way Muhammad, the perfect practitioner of Allah’s teachings, conducted his life.

Muslims believe that Allah himself is the author of the Quran, that he wrote each chapter himself and had the angel Gabriel deliver it to Muhammad, who was illiterate. Muhammad must have been endowed with perfect memory in order to transmit each verse of the Quran exactly as written by Allah. What Muhammad revealed bit-by-bit over twenty years, not a voluminous work by any measure, was recorded by various people on all manner of bones, parchments, and bark. At least four major versions of the Quran eventually emerged. So, Allah’s words were revealed by a perfect unerring messenger and were recorded by a number of imperfect humans in different versions. It remained for other imperfect humans, the Caliphs, to choose the one version they believed to be the literal perfect words of Allah and ordered the rest destroyed.

Based on the Quran itself, a number of Islamic precepts and practices clearly violate the provisions of human rights, institutionalize discrimination, and constrain liberty. A partial list of these violations is supplied below.

* Freedom of assembly, expression, and worship is either denied or severely restricted in every Islamic country.

* Women are relegated to a second class status, depriving them of many rights enjoyed by men.

* Religious minorities are often harassed, their properties are confiscated, their holy places destroyed, their cemeteries leveled, and even their persons harmed without receiving justice.

* “People of the book,” Jews and Christians, are treated as “tolerable,” since they together with Muslims are considered to be followers of the only three divine religions, while members of other religions, or no religion at all, are deemed ineligible for fair treatment under the law. Egypt, for instance, requires its citizens to obtain identity cards to be eligible for all the rights of citizenship, such as education, employment and medical care. Yet, gallingly, the same government denies these rights to those who are not members of the three divine religions or those who have no religious affiliation at all.

* The Islamic Republic of Iran officially bars its largest non-Muslim minority, the Baha’is, from many rights of citizenship, including access to higher education solely for the “sin” of practicing a different faith.

* Censorship of all sort are systemic to Islam. It is its way of mind control: an atrocious practice of keeping the mind in bondage. The press is required to parrot the approved line, and the violators are shut down and their staff imprisoned; Internet access to undesirable sites is routinely blocked; and, book publications pre-screened, and much much more.

* Women, by the very nature of their second class status expressly stipulated in the Quran, are occasionally allowed a token high position in government, while non-Muslim minority citizens are virtually barred from securing any positions at all.

To better understand Islam, a brief reference to its birth may be helpful. The founder of Islam, Muhammad, worked for and married a wealthy woman many years his senior named Khadija. One day, alone in a secluded place, Muhammad had a revelation and reported the experience to Khadija. Khadija assured him that he had been chosen by Allah as his messenger. From that point on, Muhammad proceeded to reveal the Quran and the carved-in-granite Islam and its dogma was born.

Presently, with each passing day Islam is making inroads in both the traditionally Muslim lands as well as much of the non-Muslim world where Islam is beginning to run deep roots and vie with the laws and cultures of its hosts. Muslims are taking advantage of the freedom that democracies grant. They use the same provisions of the law that are intended to protect and enhance liberty to subvert democracy and freedom.

Islam is indeed a dangerous comprehensive form of slavery. Its very name, Islam, means submission or surrender. True to its name, Islam strives for nothing short of enslavement of the body of humanity as well as the bondage of its mind.

Complacency and appeasement on the part of free people can only serve Islam. There is no chance for co-existence with Islam. All one needs to know is to see what is happening in Islamic countries. That is exactly what is in store for the presently free people of the world if Islam is not held in check.

There is a hope that Muslims themselves may leave this Bedouin slaveholder religion. Yet, the hope is slim. Islam has a stranglehold on its slaves and will neither let them go, nor do the Muslims seem to have the insight or the will to leave it in large numbers. But hope, as slim as it is, keeps me sounding the alarm before the fire of Islam engulfs us all.

Warning to free people: Don't bank on the politicians, the master practitioners of the art of the politically correct, to protect liberty. Politicians must be urged by the citizens to safeguard liberty, scrutinized closely that they do the work, and are held accountable if they fail to do so. You, a citizen, also have a job to do. Take a few minutes a day and do what you can to protect freedom. “Freedom is not free,” may be a cliché. Yet, it is the most profound four-word sentence in the lexicon of the free.

has the right learned the right? (to Sarzamin)

by Anonym7 (not verified) on

sarzamin says: "many of us should learn to read instead of blaming U.S for everything"

I doubt if anybody is blaming U.S as a whole. I do however blame the U.S right wing politicians for one of the biggest mistakes that has triggered this fairly recent wave of Islamic extremism. ... I am talking about U.S helping the Wahabi extremist movement during the cold war in Afghanistan, creation of those "madresas" (which are still operational!) in Pakistan ... etc.
If you do your reading you'll see that even Imani despite his right wing views is aware of the magnitude, and consequences of that blunder (see his blogs in iranian.com)
.... if you do further reading and read for example Symour Hersh' (*) articles/books you will realize that the current right wing Neocons have not learned much from the past mistakes, they continue to work with reactionary fanatic Wahabies/Shiites for short term gains (like weakening of Iran, so that they can control the oil).
Has the right learned the right? I seriously doubt.

Thank you

Thanks for your ROSHANGARY, we Iranian should start questioning this religion, its been around for 1400 years now and we should look closely to Muslim countries for the past 1400 years and we see no improvement, many of us should learn to read instead of blaming U.S for everything, 1400 years in Muslim areas, they could not even offer one single Asprin tablet to bashariat, nothing came out except killing, hanging, stoning and suppression. 800 university in all Muslim countries whereas there are just 900 university in India alone without considering America, Europe and many other non Muslim countries, 100 wars my Muslims which makes it number one in that category in human history, Mohammad being in 33 of it, around 700 saying in Ghoran, just 70 of them normal and 630 of them about burning, killing and etc, I was once like many of of my other hamvatan used to praise Hossein, Ali and etc, then I start questioning these people, I have done so much reading and so far I could not find one historical document that any of these guys have done anything for my country except stealing, for those who still praise these thieves, please bring me one historical document which shows that Imam Reza has done anything for Iran except stealing the wealth of Khorasan ?? if you can not, please start thinking deeper, I believe this is one of our major problem, we do not read, the other day I was watching TV and there was this program showing which countries in the world spend more on reading, it was shocking to hear that they found out that Iranian in average do one minute of reading every year (FREE reading, not school text or text for work), we should start reading our history, specially history of Islam instead of blindly following bunch of Arab that historically just stole from Iran and have done nothing else.

I believe we are obsessed with power, we worship power and those who have the power and never question them, just think abut this for a second, we stone our women to death in our country, we stone them, there is no justification for this, this is just pure backwardness, this is the most ugliest action in human kind history and we Iranian have had it for past 30 years and we are living with it, as a matter of fact many of our hamvatan are even pushing to give those who commit to these animal action the nuclear energy and simple asking that we must wait for another 200 years, stone our women for another 200 years and let other nation watch that as well without telling us anything until we decide to put stop to it, when I think about it, I just can not believe it. Ajib mardomany hastim.

@Anonym7

Do we always need someone else to tell us whats going on ?? who cares what party or religion group the Author of this article belongs, we must look at the content and judge regardless, we should not even relay only on this article alone, we must do studying in order to verify the content of this article which for most are true, if you look at Islam history, you wont find any difference and I believe the author is being honest regarding this topic, however if he is wrong in any other topic, we must judge him only for that particular argument.

@gol-dust

If you find anything in this article that has not happened in Islam history or sardarane islam did not do any of these crimes, please tell us, please give us refrence and prove him wrong, please bring me one historical document which shows your Imam Reza have done anything for Iran other than stealing ?? if you can not or if you have not read Islam history I recommend you to start reading, I was once more gheyraty about Islam than you are right now.

You said "Why don't you ever criticize the bahaii faith? Is it because it is perfect? So stop attacking other people's religions whether it is islam, christianity, judaism, hindo,,,! Religion is something private and as a persian I respect other's beliefs regardless even though I do not belong to any at this time!"

I agree with you on this, you can find many brutal wrong doing in other religion as well but why would we care about other religion right now ?? can you give me one reason that why an Iranian should care and spend time reading or talking about other religion like Christianity, Judaisms, hindo ?? It is Islam that have enforced to us for the past 1400 years not any other religion. You also say that religion is private, can you tell how is it private ?? If it is private, why do we stone our women in Iran ?? our everyday of life in Iran rule with Islam, we MUST talk the way Islam wants, dress the way Islam want, eat the way Islam want, think the way Islam want, how can this be private ?? please be realistic, chera hey bayad khodemono ghol bezanim ?? It is really a time for us to get rid of these animal action, its been 1400 years and I think that should be enough for one strong nation to understand.

@JJ

9 out of my 10 comment are getting deleted, I never use profanity in my comments or disrespect individual, for the past 1400 years we have all heard from Islam, the greatness, so please let us have some saying as well, let us question these laws that has destroyed us, let us talk, thats what we Iranian need in this time of history to solve our problems, we need to study, we need to cominucate right or wrong, we need to do ROSHANGARY, please do not stop it.

Thanks

what is the alternative?

by Anonym7 (not verified) on

Although I believe Imani points to many valid problems with Islam (and indirectly other Abrahamic religions), he loses objectivity because of his ultra right wing neonco/AIPAC political orientation. As a result, his anti Islamic propaganda not only will not produce positive impact, it will cause more harm.
Ultra right extremism with such bad resume (Iraq, Lebanon, etc) is not an attractive alternative to anyone!

A bit off topic: America

by Anonymousmk (not verified) on

A bit off topic:
America needs to wake up before it's too late:

The official newspaper of the Church of England is predicting that England will be a Muslim state within a generation:

If recent reports of trends in religious observance prove to be correct, then in some 30 years the mosque will be able to claim that, religiously speaking, the UK is an Islamic nation, and therefore needs a share in any religious establishment to reflect this. The progress of conservative Islam in the UK has been amazing, and it has come at a time of prolonged decline in church attendance that seems likely to continue.

This progress has been enthusiastically assisted by this government in particular with its hard-line multi-cultural dogma and willingness to concede to virtually every demand made by Muslims. Perhaps most importantly the government has chosen to allow hard-liners to act as representing all Muslims, and more liberal Muslims have almost completely failed to produce any leadership voices to compete, leading many Britons to wonder if there are indeed many liberal Muslims at all, surely a mistake..

Why Go Far?

by Anonymous Observer (not verified) on

We don't really need to search far and deep to see the prevelance of slavery in post-Islam Arabia. By unanimous account of all Arab historians Pirooz Nahavandi, a captured Persian (Omar's assassin) was a slave in Arabia, first of Mughaira Ibn Shuba and then of Omar himself (he was sold to Omar's family by Ibn Shuba).

I just wish that these nit wits who have posted negative comments read some history and stop defending the indefensible. Here, let me help you a little bit to conjure up a better argument:

Instead of denying historically documented facts and accusing the author of this article without proper information this is what you should say:

"Yes, Muslims did practice slavery, but that was 1400 years ago, and at that time, almost all powerful nations did that. The practice has since been denounced by Muslim scholars."

See, now that makes much more sense that burying your heads in the sand and trying to scream and argue against properly documented historical facts. Try it next time. I promise that you won't look as foolish as you do now!

Are some still living in the Age of Ignorance?-

by Truthseeker (not verified) on

Certain individuals have a particular agenda – and their agenda is not pure, nor honest but a mixture of self-righteousness, ignorance and one filled with hatred.

The most dangerous conflicts in the world are those between any two forces that believe equally strongly that virtue is on their side and the other represents the face of evil.

"Show forgiveness, speak for justice and avoid the ignorant."

Dear Friends

by Amil Imani on

Dear Friend,

Madness has overtaken a portion of humanity and what they do is nothing short of insanity.

We are losing the fight against terrorism. That is because we are missing the target.

We must reach to the world and let everyone know that terrorism is the symptom and the real problem is the ideology behind it.

We need your help. Please read the following short “Letter to Mankind” and if you agree please forward it to all the people in your address book and request them to do the same.

Send a copy to your newspaper and politician too. Everyone must hear this message.

Sincerely yours

Ali Sina

A Letter to Mankind
Dear fellow human,

Today humanity is being challenged. Unthinkable atrocities take place on daily basis. There is an evil force at work that aims to destroy us. The agents of this evil respect nothing; not even the lives of children. Every day there are bombings, every day innocent people are targeted and murdered. It seems as if we are helpless. But we are not!

The ancient Chinese sage Sun Zi said, "Know your enemy and you won't be defeated". Do we know our enemy? If we don't, then we are doomed.

Terrorism is not an ideology, it is a tool; but the terrorists kill for an ideology. They call that ideology Islam.

The entire world, both Muslims and non-Muslims claim that the terrorists have hijacked "the religion of peace" and Islam does not condone violence.

Who is right? Do the terrorists understand Islam better, or do those who decry them? The answer to this question is the key to our victory, and failure to find that key will result in our loss and death will be upon us. The key is in the Quran and the history of Islam.

Those of us, who know Islam, know that the understanding of the terrorists of Islam is correct. They are doing nothing that their prophet did not do and did not encourage his followers to do. Murder, rape, assassination, beheading, massacre and sacrilege of the dead "to delight the hearts of the believers" were all practiced by Muhammad, were taught by him and were observed by Muslims throughout their history.

If truth has ever mattered, it matters most now! This is the time that we have to call a spade a spade. This is the time that we have to find the root of the problem and eradicate it. The root of Islamic terrorism is Islam. The proof of that is the Quran.

We are a group of ex-Muslims who have seen the face of the evil and have risen to warn the world. No matter how painful the truth may be, only truth can set us free. Why this much denial? Why so much obstinacy? How many more innocent lives should be lost before YOU open your eyes?

We urge the Muslims to leave Islam. Stop with excuses, justifications and rationalizations. Stop dividing mankind into "us" vs. "them" and Muslims vs. Kafirs. We are One people, One mankind! Muhammad was not a messenger of God. It is time that we end this insanity and face the truth. The terrorists take their moral support and the validation for their actions from you. Your very adherence to their cult of death is a nod of approval for their crimes against humanity.

We also urge the non-Muslims to stop being politically correct lest they hurt the sensitivities of the Muslims. To hell with their sensitivities! Let us save their lives, and the lives of millions of innocent people that could become their victims.

Millions, if not billions of lives will be lost if we do nothing. Time is running out! "All it takes for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing." Do something! Send this message to everyone in your address book and ask them to do the same. Defeat Islam and stop terrorism. This is your world, save it.

Amil, do you see the moslems writing articles against Bahaii?

Why do you always attack moslems? KERMAK DAARI? I feel as though you are getting paid by someone just to attack moslems especially the shia! I hope AIPAC and Condi rice's $87 million fund has nothing to do with you. If that's not the case, then why? Why don't you ever criticize the bahaii faith? Is it because it is perfect? So stop attacking other people's religions whether it is islam, christianity, judaism, hindo,,,! Religion is something private and as a persian I respect other's beliefs regardless even though I do not belong to any at this time!

So, please pull it out of moslems behind, and get a life! BTW When I was your name on the article I didn't even bother wasting my time reading it, and I just guessed what a trash might be!

K Nassery

I actually researched slavery last year.

by K Nassery on

Saudi Arabia made slavery illegal in 1962.  I thought that was shocking.

If you have a chance to visit Springfield, Illinois, you might visit the Lincoln Presidential Library.  There are very interesting exhibits concerning the issue of slavery in the Western World. I was surprised to find out that Whites were slaves also, not just indentured servants but slaves born into a lifetime of slavery.  Chinese were brought to work on the railroads and they were held in bondage too.  Native Americans tribes were at times slaves both to the colonists and to other tribes.

This discussion is important in todays news also.  A white Catholic Priest visited Senator Obama's Church in Chicago and declared that all white people have to give up their 401Ks as punishment for our ancestors' actions.  The Black audience cheered because they want to punish White people.

 //www.youtube.com/watch?v=_H11x6bMu4Y&e

I think this kind of accusation and the reaction of the Black community will hurt Senator Obama's chance to become President. Many Americans from the beginning of this country were abolishionists and they wanted to stop slavery.  To condem all Whites is a terrible mistake and shows that you are ignorant of the facts.

I know that the Middle East and the West have had slaves, but I don't think that any person living today should be punished for a crime that happened a century or more ago.  That is not just.

Imani you say: "The God I believe in is pure love. He does not kill, does not plunder, and does not curse."

Imani, many of the things you say in your article about Islam are fairly correct.
However in many of your past articles you aligned yourself with necon/AIPAC, and Bush. That really does not much with what your God is about .... why do you support these guys?

The Problem is Islam, not Muslims

by Amil Imani on

We have to make the distinction between Muslims and Islam. Muslims are people, human beings like you and I with the same goodness, hopes and aspirations that characterizes all of us humans; but Islam is the doctrine that teaches humans to hate other humans. Most Muslims know nothing of Islam. The average Muslim still believes that Islam is a religion of peace because the name drives from the word peace. Many Muslims believe that Muhammad was honest. They don’t know about the crimes committed by the holy Prophet and that he was a vindictive man who killed innocent people without any guilt. The majority of Muslims believer that Muhammad encouraged manumitting the slaves and don’t know how ruthless he attacked innocent people massacred them and enslaved their children and wives. They still believe that Muhammad married so many wives to protect them from “starvation” but do not know the details of his scandalous and rapist lustful sexual crimes.

The majority of Muslims are good because they do not know Islam. And yes there are many good people and saints amongst them, but the credit should not go to Islam. Muslims are good despite Islam, and they are good because they do not follow the teachings of Quran.

Those who come to know Islam, belong to two categories. One group finds Islam appealing and in accordance with their criminal nature. They kill people, torture their fellow human beings, become terrorists and practice the Quran and the Sunnah gleefully and shamelessly. You find them amongst the Taliban, the Mullah of Iran and the Islamic terrorists everywhere. The other group finds it appalling when they discover the truth about Islam and leave it. If you are a Muslim you have to ask yourself which category you belong? After learning the truth about Islam and seeing the evidence presented here you and I do no more belong to the “ignorant” majority. By Ignorance I mean ignorant of Islam. Now you know the truth about Islam and what is in Quran. If you choose Islam, after learning the truth about it, you choose a path different from those who value first and foremost human decency, truth and rightness. Here is where each person's true nature is shown. Here is where the separation between good and evil is made. You may choose to follow the good and abandon Islam; or you may choose to follow this dark hatemongering cult of killing and turn your back towards humanity and righteousness.

This is where we show our true nature. We all read the same hate laden verses of Quran and the same shocking stories of the crime reported from the Prophet. But our reaction is different. Those crimes do not go with my constitution and many other honest people. But some have no difficulty accepting them. Some of us are shocked to learn what Muhammad did to Safiyah, raping her after killing her father and in the same day that he killed her husband and many of her relatives; others feel nothing. Some of us are appalled to read the details of the first holocaust caused by Muhammad, the genocide and the cold-blooded massacre of the Jews of Arabia; others feel nothing. Some of us cringe when we read that the Prophet used to terror his opponents like a common gangster, showed no mercy even to a 120-year-old man or a nursing mother of 5, whose crimes was nothing more than composing a lyric spurning him. That does not bother some Muslims at all. We are disgusted when we're told that this man, the holy prophet of Allah, (peace be upon his immaculate soul) burned the tree plantations and destroyed water wells, that for him ends justified the means and that he broke every moral and ethical code to get at what he wanted. To others it may be the sign of a great statesman. Some of us shudder when we read that the Prophet invaded merchant caravans, plundered towns and cities, enslaved people, ordered raping of the women captured in his wars and enriched himself by stealing the wealth of his victims and selling them as slaves. To other Muslims all that is part of being a messenger of God.

If that is how you feel, obviously you and I have very different values. The God I believe in is pure love. He does not kill, does not plunder, and does not curse. My God does not order rape, does not assassinate, He does not discriminate and does not call a part of humanity najis (filthy). My God is not the khairul makerin “master deceiver”, as he is described in Quran and is not a ruthless tyrant. He does not burn anyone is the blazing fire for eternity because s/he has failed to recognize him and to worship him. If after learning these facts, you are still a Muslim then for you all that is okay. It all boils down to who we are and what values we hold dear to our heart.

If I believed in Satan, I would have said, Allah is the Satan for his deeds unveils his true identity and his satanic nature. But as it is evident, there are Muslims who do not follow Islam because it is good but because it reaffirms their values. Fortunately the majority of the people, who now call themselves Muslims, have different values than those taught by Islam. They believe in goodness, in kindness, in equality of all the people irrespective of their beliefs or gender. They believe in love not in hate and they want to embrace all humanity in amity, not kill them because their religion is not right. These people when learn about the true Islam will abandon it. And since this knowledge is spreading very fast, millions of Muslims are leaving Islam and this exodus is gaining momentum. Soon nothing will be left of Islam but a bad name and a sore memory. But not all Muslims will leave Islam. The criminals and those with hate in their hearts will remain loyal to Muhammad just as there are still neo-nazis who still hale Hitler. But their number will be reduced and their harm would be contained.

If you pass by France, make a visit to Luvre Museum to see a 1400-year-old drawing by a traveling Christian monk showing the victorious arab army lining up Persian women for sale in slavery market at the dawn islam.
