They should ban it everywhere
by divaneh on Sat May 28, 2011 03:52 PM PDTI think that little stack on the top is needed for when it gets larger, just like when you wear condom and leave a little slack at the end. I also think people should be able to sue thier parents and the butcher who performed the job. Good one Ari.
MM, circumcision hieroglyph
by Ari Siletz on Fri May 27, 2011 01:18 PM PDTThe hieroglyph image comes from a catalog of art work sold here.
Elsewhere, this info can be found:
In Saqqara, in Ankhmahon’s tomb. Visir of the Pharoah Teti (Dynasty
2345 BC) there is a bas-relief with a representation of circumcision. The
hieroglyphics illustrate the dialogue:
The operator laying on the floor on the left tells his assistant, who’s holding
the patience’s arms:
“Hold it, quickly, don’t let it fall”
he answers
“I’ll do as you want”.
On the right, instead, the patient says:
“Rub it well, to make it efficacious”
and the operator answers:
“I’ll make it painless, pleasant”.
These last sentences let us suppose that the object in the operator’s hands, on
the right, had an anesthetic use, others affirm that it is a sharp tool and that
the word “rub” refers to the sharpening.
According to Nunn the circumcision has a ritual meaning to access virility
instead of being an hygienic practice as it is usually thought.
This explains better the meaning of the presence of this scene in the dignitary’s
tomb, if it refers to himself or to his children, but doesn’t explain the
meaning of the dialogue.

1st amendment is correct. I must have been thinking about my gun which I keep close by as a substitute to what I lost to circumcision. Ari, where did you get your painful blog picture?
VPK,
We should put out a blog on a collection of circumcision jokes. Laughter can sure ease the pain, no matter what the source!
One more thing
by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Fri May 27, 2011 04:17 AM PDTI was talking to my cousin visiting from Iran. She told me that some genius had come up with a Persian word for "Keravat". I mean the "neck tie". The word was "deraz aviz". The word thankfully did not catch on. Now I see why! In many of our Mosalmoon and Jewish brothers it would have had to be "used to be" deraz aviz now it is nimeh aviz ya kootah aviz.
Outch that hurt!

A ban would be great
by Ari Siletz on Thu May 26, 2011 10:25 PM PDT...MM makes a strong point. First Amendment says, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." However, First Amendment protection of religious ritual has eroded since the Supreme Court ruled it wasn't OK for Native Americans to use peyote in their religious rituals. People have to obey the laws that apply to the general citizen, according to Justice Scalia. At the time I was pissed at the mainly Reagan appointee court; now I'm gleefully thinking "What's good for the goose..."
Oh Boy, Ari - this fight will be bloody
by MM on Thu May 26, 2011 08:41 PM PDTWhile not comparing apples and oranges, the anti-circumcision folks have a point since female circumcision, exercised in some nations, is looked down as a crime here in the US. One the other hand, we got the religious groups who will call circumcision a religious right of passage and hold up the second amendment.
But, I have a feeling the 2nd amendment will prevail.
Circumcision is a cruel act
by Multiple Personality Disorder on Thu May 26, 2011 04:00 PM PDT.
.
Removal of the prepuce of a male or the clitoris, prepuce, or labia of a female is a cruel practice, originating from ignorance. Having said that, since most of us are already circumcised or have circumcised our children or grandchildren, out of ignorance, we do not want to put the guilt on our parents or try to come up with justification for why this practice is a “good” thing; instead the effort should be focused on allowing adults to decide for themselves what they want to do to their bodies instead of someone else making that decision for them while they are a minor.
Good blog Ari about a sensitive subject.
Should be banned
by ramintork on Thu May 26, 2011 03:22 PM PDTVery funny.
By the way, legally once you have signed a consent form for a procedure and something has been removed from your body you no longer own that part.
There is a legal case of a man with rare anti-bodies who was being asked by his fortune hunting Doctor to regularly go and give blood. The man became suspicious and when he found out he raised a case but lost because the blood no longer was his and not even a penny from the billions generated from the new developed medicine based on his genes was given to him.
Coing to the subject, I think this procedure should be banned. I certainly did not sign a covenant form with Jehovah/Allah nd the propoganda that it is medically better for you is nonesense!
It is a
by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Thu May 26, 2011 02:04 PM PDTviolation of human and in particular child's rights. I am a male Iranian who was circumcised. I already told my parents I think they were idiots for doing it. They were just being "good" Muslims.
*** that! It was not theirs to give. If an adult wants to self mutilate to please some imaginary God it is their right. But it is definitely not their right to mutilate their kid. It must be outlawed for anyone under 18 to have this procedure done.
Let grown ups do what they will to themselves. But to a kid: no! And it that means I will never get my seventy virgin then: good! I hope if there is an afterlife I will be as far as possible from Mohammad.
LOL
by Azadeh Azad on Thu May 26, 2011 01:50 PM PDTI believe that the male child circumcision is a violation of the child's human rights.
//www.doctorsopposingcircumcision.org/info/info-humanrights2006.html
When I was 6 years old, I witnessed the circumcision of my second younger brother, was traumatized by his pain and screams, and felt so very happy to be a girl.
So, my experience regarding male circumcision is a mixture of happiness and sadness, very much like the above write-up :-)
Cheers,
Azadeh
