A nation had lost all hope and was ready to throw in the towel when it came to their World Cup aspirations, and he chose this day to remind us all that Team Melli is worth fighting for, that his jersey and place in that team was worth fighting for. A slap in Ali Daei's face for sure as he dribbled three Arabs and netted the goal. He is truly Iran's Iranian of the Day today. Thank you Ali Karimi for helping keep the dream alive just a little longer!

by Assal_B on Thu Jun 11, 2009 02:12 PM PDTThey say that Iranians like to take a simple walk and turn it into a grueling marathon. This is most true when it comes to Team Melli! I hope the long road will lead to a deserved place among the nations that will compete in South Africa. When we play against the best teams in the world, our game measures up accordingly. I am excited and hopeful for the future.
P.S. One day soon we need to get together so I can show you all the pictures I have taken with various team members. Sadly, Karimi and Kaabi are not among them, but they will always be my favorites!
Viva Team Melli!

I love Ali Karimi! Several years ago, I met him once on a trip outside Iran, too, and found him to be an extremely polite and charming young man.
I think what helps or ails the Iranian soccer team, and all other sports for that matter, is not any one given individual or coach, but the government's approach to athletics in general.
I'm glad he was in the game and I am grateful for his efforts. Here's hoping that we repeat the "long way to World Cup" routine, something Iran did once before.
Go Team Melli!

by Assal_B on Thu Jun 11, 2009 12:30 PM PDTI respect your suggestion that we should all not be so reactionary: But, I have been a big fan of Ali Karimi's football career from the beginning, through the mahroomiat and return to football. In the tug-of-war between Daei and Karimi this past year (and more), the people who truly suffered the most were the fans. It hurts me to think that had Daei not been coach, Karimi might have added the extra energy our team needed early on (and maybe we wouldn't be on the brink of being cut out).
Ali Daei does not like Ali Karimi and has never wanted him on Team Melli. He went on a power trip and thought he could change football dynamics. The players will always be more important than the coaches and being an ex-player himself doesn't give Daei any extra advantage. Karimi has worked hard for his team and he puts in a good game, way better than many other players on the pitch with him.
In light of the fact that his single goal did save us from completely losing our chance to continue on, all I have to say is: IN MY OPINION, it's fair and accurate to say Karimi's goal was a slap in Daei's face. Who cares about being nice?
Zendeh baad teemeh melli, zendeh baad Persepolis!
Not to take anything away from Ali Karimi...
by Ali P. on Thu Jun 11, 2009 11:43 AM PDTbut it is not fair, accurate, or nice to consider his goal a slap in anyone's face. Noone really knows, what would have happened, had Ali Karimi not played.
We may have won the game 2-0. Would you have then said, not playing Ali Karimi was the right thing to do?
I suggest we all decide not to be so reactionary, not as a nation, and not as individuals.
Congratulations on the victory, and may we win the next game as well.
