Also, I meant people are in love with other people not a country/national.  Perhaps, their neighbor man/woman, the wife/husband, their children, etc.

Good day.

Thanks for links.  Kate Bush was great though Britny's  performace has never be my type.

What diagnostics?!  It was just some thoughts, and they are usually wrong:) 1/3? It takes time and a good doctor to personalize the medication.

I am an Aristocrat wannabe comrade!!

by Paykar on

Banan's voice was 4 doungs shy of six! Baritones have this limitation. It's "god" given; being a humanist :-), I value skill and the process an artist goes through while perfecting his skill and creating new work.

In 1979, Banan was 68 years old and in poor health. The two treasures you named, I believe. have a full range of voice and were somewhat close to half his age. They would both admit that in terms of technique, generally, and Morakab khani in particular, we have never had and, perhaps, never will have anyone like Banan(I am sorry for repeating what you had already said, I just wanted to get Morakab Khani in there:-)

Ostad Shajarian started out by imitating Banan. He tells a story about a long trip he had on a bus, he says he had a record player with him and played one particular song of Banan fifty times, singing along to perfectly pick up Banan's intonations, he continues by saying he gave up because he could not do it (comrade you are in good company).

It is a natural law, everything changes. With the revolution and desire of so many intellectuals to reject all aspects of “gharb zadegi” and to promote traditional instruments, there was a shift which changed the scene very much. One has to admit, our instruments while amazing in subtlety, have their own limitations. Try listening to Beethoven’s # five with Tar va Kamanche; Shostakovich's # 7? Forget about it.

No more big orchestras, no piano, no violin; and with the giants such as khaleghi and Mahjoobi long departed, and most students of Saba sidelined, we totally lost the "Golden age".

p.s. you actually chose kate over Britney? lol

Mash Ghasem

Comrade Paykargar, are we putting down Popular-Culture?

by Mash Ghasem on

or Banan, his silky voice, and his limitation!

Banan's voice and songs are beyond superlatives. As you amply provide the germane info.  His mastery of Classical music is undisputable, yet when it came to 1979, he couldn't even play with Shajarian. Not that he was conservative or anything, probably just too old. He thought they played too fast, which they did, and it wasn't his style. The generation after him: Shajarian, Nazeri,...don't have his voice, that sophisticated training, but in terms of their repertiore they are years ahead of him.

P.S. Thanks for Kate Bush, she's great.

P.S.S. god knows how many times in my life I've tried to sing like Banan, especially under shower, always  failing miserably, but god says: keep me out of this.

My thoughts regarding your thoughts...

by Paykar on

Dear Comments-

You stated that those “in love” chose Banan; I think it’s fair to assume, you are implying that a sense of national pride is the primary motivation for such a choice. While some might be familiar with him only because of the national anthem and/or the forever fresh “Boyeh Joyeh Molian;”Banan was a great singer and interpreter of our classic poetry. He also has a number of great, lighter, pop songs (they were not called pop then, Tasnif would be the word).

This is how Golnoush khaleghi* has summarized his talent and contribution to Iranian music:

“Banan was blessed with the gift of a warm baritone voice, perfect intonation, a singing technique that was never harsh, and an uncanny sensitivity to designing his tahrirs (ornamentations) so that they were never overdone or redundant. He was a master of the Persian radif. He knew the structure of every dastgah and its gushes (pieces), and was capable of performing the most complex modulations. He had a deep understanding and knowledge of Persian poetry and a keen sense of rhythm. His vocal improvisations were perfectly allied with the lyrics and intensified the meaning of the words.”

Some of us enjoy his work after all these years, precisely, because of his great talent (to me he painted all sorts of images with words) and uniqueness of his voice. When he was accompanied with one instrument, you would get a sense that his vocals dictated how the player would play; and with orchestra (Golha for example) there was a magical infusion of his voice and the music.

Parts of human brain do not fully develop till early to mid twenties (areas involved in making judgments; regulation of affect…), therefore I am inclined to ignore the music that is driven by Fourteen year old girls (or pubescent boys for that matter), who spend their baby-sitting money to see a given "artist" whom they find irresistible. Similarly, grown up men salivate over “giants” say, like Britney Spears, do so because of the bulge in their pants.

I like to be transported to a different sphere, as the artist takes me on a delightful journey with him/her, sharing so generously the sonic wonders, insights, sorrows, and inspirations he/she has toiled to create; a creation so masterfully capable of evoking every imaginable emotion in me.

One more point, I take issue with your imperiousness, namely, your broad “diagnosis” of listeners of certain genre of music, or particular songs with depression. Even if correct, your remedy’s efficacy is questionable (they show some benefits in one third of individuals).

You’ve got the occasional blues? Listen to some uplifting music.

* M.S. Khaleghi is a musician/composer; she is daughter of the great Rouhullah Khaleghi, who composed many fantastic pieces such as Azarbijan and Ey Iran.

Look at these two for comparison only!

Very nice choices from all

by Shepesh on

One thing I do want to say is we are comparing chalk with cheese with regards to classical music and pop music, if we talk about internet promotions used to sell records. I doubt if classical music lovers go to the internet to see 'videos' of classics , they are a different audience and buy CDs to listen to.

I think you misunderstood the point I was making. I am not against Justin Bieber or any other artist! I listen to many other genres of music too. My point was more about popular culture and using number of video hits on Youtube to compare a pop star of our times to one of the greatest musical minds of all time where talent and musical abilities is concerned.  Mozart has one of the greatest musical minds in the history of the world.

I hope you and Yolanda continue to enjoy any type of music that appeals to you.

Thanks Ayneh for the suggestion.  It was a bit difficult for me to understand after I read the lyrics carefully.  I mean yes, you were right about different interpretations.

I think you should also keep track of "stuff" musics especially the posted one.  I think there should be a place below the "stuff" music for comments.  There are so many things we could say about those musics.

Your suggestion about music options is so much fun.  I am sure you will receive sooooo many comments soon.

Jonas Brothers?  Yes, true.  One has to be really really smart to survive.  Other than talents and popularity there are so many politics are involved too.  For example, imagine how one's income increases a bit after so many hardwork and efforts!  You have to be really really something that they let you to carry such a big income and wealth.  It's a matter of communications, leadership and so many other things.  How funny is to compare a singer income with a well known scientist?:)  Politics....

Anahi Jan, Yavar Hameesheh momen is in my view the best of Darioush, and also among my best.

Mash Ghasem, I thought Faramarz would have "U2's haven't found what I am looking for as his top song, but what do I know".

Comments: "... know most people have negative idea about mental medicaiton, but there
is no difference among medications and reasons to take it...."    here's one I think you will like.   It is not straight forward, it is called Golden Brown by Stranglers, and there are many interpretations for it:

BTW, the first few seconds has shots of Masjed Shah in Isphahan!

Hi Comments,

Justin Bieber may be an One Hit Wonder......I doubt that he can be like Elvis, Michael Jackson, or Madonna generate hit song after hit song.......right now he is hot.......but it is possible the his music career is short-lived......look what happened to Jonas Brothers!

Yes, the fans are teenagers.  What about when Justin becomes 60 years old?  I think his new movie is worth to watch.

By the way, it's soooooooooo sweet that some Iranians are still in love.  I would ask some special people, who were part of my life at different times, return slices of my heart.  They were stolen and a small part was hurt and badly damaged.  I am sure they are not in IC, but probably some where in the world if still alive.

p.s. haven't people forgot Golpa.

A video with 500 million hits can not be ignored! It is true that Justin Bieber's fans are mostly teenagers, but they are part of our society! Young people are big part of the music market!

My thoughts_IN GENERAL

by comments on

I like this website.  I think the options show one of the followings:

1) Iranians who are still in love. e.g. selection of Banan.

1) Extreme home sickness..........

2) Loving past and forgeting present

3) Depression: we live in an advanced world and we are not supposed to be depressed and torture ourself.  Why not take a medication for a period of time?  I know most people have negative idea about mental medicaiton, but there is no difference among medications and reasons to take it.  All about individual's biochemistry at certain time/age.  Maybe because of genes, but usually the timing for immigrants.

p.s. when I read comments I usually don't check the user name.  Almost everywhere in IC.

I disagree with you about Justin Bieber.  I suggest you to read the biography of young singers, and think about the possibility of becoming a celebrity at such a competitive world.

That's true they are much younger than us, but it doesn't mean that they are not approciated.

I do not know where I read it. By the way these two play, one would not think Hackett was an influence. I might have read it on youtube! in which case the credibility is next to nill.

Edit. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:  After leaving GTR, Hackett resumed his solo career and has released
albums and toured on a regular basis since. His body of work has
encompassed many styles, such as progressive rock, world music, and classical. His playing has influenced guitarists such as Alex Lifeson and Brian May. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010.

Banan and Marzyieh collaborated on many songs, and the one that I was thinking about when I wrote the list (w/ Banan and Marzyieh in mind) was bouye jouye moulian, one of my favorites.

If you like atmospheric (guitar) sound, check out Steve Hackett's work with Genesis. Alex lifeson of Rush and Brian May of the Queen name him as their influence.
