You think a spell checker is your problem?!

by Esfand Aashena on

This is like asking our good old Hajiagha to use a spell check!  He spells thief as tiff, now how is spell check going to help him any?

Or the font?  Our good friend Mr. Bagherzadeh writes in Farsi every week, you think he is even remotely concerned about the font?  We read Farsi every day, you think we care about the font?  Is the English font on this website such a big deal?  It's the same crap!

This is all probably a waste of time.  You need other adjustments which I'm sure you disagree with and blame it on Iranians being so and so instead of looking in the mirror.  It aint spell check, font or us buddy!

Everything is sacred

Laguage aint an abstract thing!

by Disenchanted on

It is embedded in the culture and environment. For those of us who live in US it will be very hard to put our experiences in Farsi terms.

This is from someone who loves the Farsi language and knows a lot about persian poetry and culture. By the way I appreciate if someone points me to a good Farsi font software....

        Saadi has it:

No proper internet optimized font / project fund.

by comments on

There is no proper internet optimized font because the project has to fund by an institute that values our language.  It could be from Iran, Afghanistan or Tajikistan governments.  It is unfortunate that Iranian government wants to hear less from Iranians. Perhaps, another option to fund could be from a Persian language department outside Iran.  I cannot come up with another priority for their funds.

I am not sure if Iranians themselves want to communicate in Farsi.  Maybe, we should work on our culture prior to on our language!

I'd like to see this blog develop into a serious discussion about the culture of our language, and its relation to the language of our culture........the effects of internet on our writing in Farsi, etc..............

Pity, all of our pundits are busy driving their used car to Mexico at the moment............

bahmani

My point exactly

by bahmani on

There is no spellchecker built into the site posting, and so my spellings are off by a mile. Apologies in advance.

This tool I am using now, in English, has a spellchecker built right into it.

What I had to do was write it out in a Farsi text editor that did not have a spell checker, and then cut and paste it into this page, and then right justify it.

The entire exercise took me an hour to craft, write, copy and paste and post.

My point was, that the main reason why I don't write in Farsi on this site. Which is that there is no proper internet optimized font, AND the over arching rules and antiquated regulations of the "proper" Persian written form.

These self inflicted rules, forces us all to write more formally, when the world around us (twitter FB etc.) is now entirely and utterly informal.

No wonder, our expression of freedom is so inherently weak. We are forced and stifled by our customs and traditions into being formal and polite!

While what is being done to us is cruel and rude to say the least!

My opinion that is always important.

I liked your accent in writing.  It shows that you are from Tehran, or you have communicated only with Iranians from Tehran. All Iranians have learned the concept of freedom of speech when they left Iran. That could be a reason that we all communicate in English.  As well, Farsi presents our own culture.  In our own culture there are many subjects that might make us uncomfortable including sex.

Your blog reminded me one of the recent blog, which was something about Penis and old ladies.  I didn't find the title entertaining, cool or serious.  I am sure it was not cool if it was about vagina either.

All cultures have their own limitations, but in Farsi there are too many. The subject related to sex was just an example. BTW: are we supposed to know our first language better or our second language better?

by Esfand Aashena on

Ever since I found Behnevis I write more and more in Farsi and I love every minute of it! It's definately not a tradition that is going to go away.  I don't know if it ever WAS a tradition for you.

Your Farsi spelling is as bad as your soccer commentary! But you are a smart guy and I read your material.

There are plenty of typos in the text above. Let's see if you can correct them in the next 10 minutes and re-post in the comment section.

As for your soccer knowledge, you made a comment in Bahrain 6-0 post that Iran was lucky to be in a weak group. Well, that was not luck, it was by design. The top five seeds in Asia (including Australia) were put in different groups. The next phase is when there will be two groups of five and Iran will have one of the three top teams, Japan, South Korea or Australia in its group.

just arbitrarily adopt the latin script using our own language. Sort of formalized Penglish, ay? They did it 'cause they are "part, I say part of Europe...."

Dude, we have much bigger problems than this.
