I remember distinctively the smell of emshi, a not so pleasant smelling poisonous liquid sprayed in the air solely with the purpose of killing unwanted flies. To suggest a chemical way of mass killing of flies would not be an exaggeration.
So, I was wondering what does it mean and says about a persons wanting to emshi some one else when in an ideological disagreement with other person?
Furthermore, can that person be trusted as a civil minded individual and if not can we use the term "vahshi" to describe such behavior?

by Bavafa on Tue Jun 21, 2011 09:56 AM PDTI admit, I had never heard 'Emshi' to be used as 'walk', so it confirms it even more that it has different meaning in different circles.
One thing however, it seems with all its different verison and meaning, using it points to a level of intolerance and incivility.

That's right MM
by divaneh on Mon Jun 20, 2011 07:02 PM PDTThis is the same meaning as in Khuzistan i.e. walk walk, go, go away, walk away, get lost. If you try emsh in google translator you get "walk".
مشی طریق (walking a path) is another derivative of the verb emsh.
Google translates "emshi emshi" as "walk walk"
by MM on Mon Jun 20, 2011 05:23 PM PDTIf I put in one emshi in, it translates it as "I walk", or is it amshi??? As stated here, it may just be a slang in Khuzestan for get lost!
Emshi means GO
by divaneh on Mon Jun 20, 2011 04:04 PM PDTArabs in Khuzistan used the word Emshi and it meant "go". I don't know if it has a different meaning in other Arabic dialects. When they said Emshi Emshi it meant something like "get lost". I think it has been used to the same effect in the blog in question.
Roozbeh: As a bacheh shahrestoni
by Bavafa on Mon Jun 20, 2011 04:00 PM PDTShokofeh-no was an ice cream parlor in our town with a rather friendly family atmosphere. This was of course during Shah's time when family gathering in an ice cream parlor was rather safe.
But I get your meaning regarding the often times seen & expressed hostility on IC and concur. I think it is rather sad that how relatively few active and presumably educated ones here on IC who specially have at least experienced a democratic system can not participate without hostility. I also believe it is rather telling about those who resort to hostility in a conversation.
It is wrong if expressed against you, me or the next person.

Shokofeh no was very famous
by Anahid Hojjati on Mon Jun 20, 2011 02:42 PM PDTBut I had no idea that Shaaban bimokh started fights there. Someone should have emshied him out. Can this word be used in poems?
Mehrdad,
by Roozbeh_Gilani on Mon Jun 20, 2011 01:59 PM PDTI could be wrong, but for some reason I believe that Emshi was actually an Urdu (indian) world, later adapted by British.
Well that was the linguistic part of it, but to your main point, if any consolation, I get Emshied and more on a regular basis on this site for stating my mind. Someday, we as a nation will have to come to terms with the simple fact that we do not have to be enemies just because we happen to disagree. Mind you, the highly polarised, undemocratic political situation in our country for generations, has a lot to answer for the way we behave and communicate.
While at it, I have heard of stories of a cafe/bar place called "shokofe no" in Tehran during shah era, where shaban bi mokh used to frequent and have fights. This site at times resembles the cyber version of "Shokofe no"!

Anahid Jaan, COP and MM
by Bavafa on Mon Jun 20, 2011 01:56 PM PDTThanks for the insight, I didn't know the origin of the word to be Arabic. As for the usage of the word (metaphorically) I tend to agree but also it seems to have had different meaning in different circles friend as COP indicated. In our circle of friends/school it was used to mean 'get rid of'. For example if we were going to a party or cinema with a few friends and there was one friend that was not so welcomed in the group yet never got the hint, one would quietly say, "emshish kon" Later on, with the rise of IRI and their intolerance thugs, the term evolved into a harsher meaning. When in political discussion and disagreement, to use "emshi" meant, again 'to get rid of' but more as to destroy/disarm/neutralize him/her (of course only metaphorically)
Now, this term was used here in the context of a political discussion which arose my curiosity as what this term means to others?

Pesticide
by Cost-of-Progress on Mon Jun 20, 2011 12:51 PM PDTWhen i was a kid, emshi was the pesticide (or the means to apply it) that was sprayed to kill bugs. Later on in high school, when someone was called emshi, it meant that he was backward, or "not cool" - Didn't know it is also arabic for hit the road. I shall ask my arab buddies soon, you know, from the horse's mouth...or camel's mouth in this acse.......he he.

Bavafa jan, Emshi is Arabic for hit the road
by Anahid Hojjati on Mon Jun 20, 2011 12:45 PM PDTwhich now makes me wonder whether Emshi the spray was using the word as intended, kind of seems so. When someone says it in a disagreement, it is not a good sign and the behavior is not nice. I don't know if we can go as far as calling the person "vahshi".
