Shirin Ebadi: Voice of Democracy or Voice of Mullahcracy?
by Amil Imani on Wed Mar 26, 2008 05:00 PM PDTMonday, 15 May 2006
The biggest surprise of 2003 was when an Iranian human rights activist, Shirin Ebadi, became the first Iranian ever to win a Nobel Peace Prize. Yet, the Nobel committee referred to her as the first Muslim woman, completely denying her nationality, which angered Iranian nationalists. It is rumored Ebadi will appear on an up coming Oprah Winfrey Show while Ebadi tours the United States to promote her book.
Iran's people have suffered enough cultural destruction from Islam, but now even the Nobel committee was denying Iranian nationality, and promoting Islam instead.

additional information/suggestion, for whatever it's worth....
by aaj sr (not verified) on Wed Mar 26, 2008 01:17 PM PDTIt seems the video clipping is an older one and since then, due to many criticism, she has been more vocal against the regime, however, almost everyone, specially oppositions outside expecting more from her, and those from inside Iran, suggesting that she is walking on a very sharp sword.
After all we saw what had happened to Ms. Esfandiari, Zahra Kazemi and others, for the regime, it's not too difficult to send one of "chain killer" to silence her, and later on, even if they find the killer!!, he can be released by a simple Fatwa.
The best she can do is to leave Iran and be a real voice of all women and oppositions, provided she denounce the barbaric Islamic/Sharia laws, specially those that are against common sense, and contradict Human Rights.
She is my God
by Abarmard on Wed Mar 26, 2008 01:09 PM PDTShe is absolutely right. I follow her and people like her because I know they have nothing to gain for themselves. She should be heard by all LA Iranians specially.
Western media wanted to use her for their own advantage but she refused and you never saw or hear from her again. I love her mind. That's the way to freedom, with our own, by our own, for ourselves.
What would you do if "you"
by bojnoord (not verified) on Wed Mar 26, 2008 12:40 PM PDTWhat would you do if "you" were in her shoes???
Come right out and tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth( and one night get into a "Funny" accident,or have a stranger do you in)... or walk the fine line she has to walk and keep a semblance of balance?!
What she's saying here is not that everything is fine and dandy and no problems exist for the Iranian women, but she's trying to say that Iranian women are Capable of doing things ... great things...despite what is going on inside Iran - the hardship they have to endure- which the whole world is aware of! ( I'm not talking about the average person on the streets of US, but those people who are aware of the WORLD!)
She's talking about the jame-eh of Iranian women not the ruling party.
That's my take anyway!
Limited airtime
by David ET on Wed Mar 26, 2008 08:34 PM PDTShirin Ebadi and Iranians have limited access to airtime on foreign media. The question is how to use it:
To talk about the IR government , woman and human rights violations, etc..which is what Iranians expect people such as Shirin Ebadi to do....
ORr take that limited time to talk about American foreign policy or what's good in Iran which Islamic Republic with its full control of media and multi-million dollar budget is already doing and broadcasting worldwide
That is what is (and has been wrong) with Ebadi ever since the beginning. She has been a critique and and apologist at the same time when it comes to foreign press
It is matter of priorities and what Ebadi's role is
here we are is true

Dr Ebadi is not lying
by IRANdokht on Wed Mar 26, 2008 09:34 AM PDTShe's correct, we have very active female presence in the Iranian society, she just forgot to mention it's despite the constant harrassments, imprisonments and the other obstacles they are facing! If there are more women in the universities, it's because Iranian women are making a statement that we're not going to sit down and take it. Just like Dr Ebadi herself didn't.
the IRI gov is so troubled by these women that it's going to put restrictions on the number of women allowed in Universities.
So yes, it's not the black hole that some are envisioning from afar, but that is not a sign of a progressive IRI regime, only showing that people have resisted the restrictions and will not surrender to their backward uncivilized ways.
Dr Ebadi is not lying, but she's not really telling the whole truth either and I do not blame her, because if I had half her courage I would be living in Iran like she does.

Shirin Ebadi is RIGHT
by Come on Guys (not verified) on Wed Mar 26, 2008 08:39 AM PDTEveryone here is confused and wrong. Shirin Ebadi is being objective and right. It's not black and white. She is stating FACTS about women in Iran. She forgot to also mention that 1/3 of doctors are women. She forgot to mention many other achievements of women inside Iran. But the reality is that in a Muslim country, Iranian women are active in all public spheres and present at the university. Compare this situation now to a US ally in the region like Saudi Arabia, where women can not drive.
As for "Manesh" which tries to defend her walking a fine line, that too is bogus claim. This is exactly why they gave her the Nobel Peace Prize. She is untouchable and IRI can not kill her. This is in fact why she says what she says. But when she decides to say good things, she is somehow apologizing or saying it to "stay alive," this too is ridicolous. Only somebody who hasn't been to Iran in 30 years would suggest that.
We even recently just saw the Iranian Women Firefighters as the only unit in the entire Middle East. Why are you people so bi-ensaf! You hate the government, we get it. But its made all of you distort the reality. It's clouding your vision. Iran is not that "hell-hole" you imagine it to be. Yes there are many problems, but we are making improvements daily. It takes time with such a culture.
Guess some of you won't call it progress until women are in bikini's advertising for western corportations and drinking beer?
In all fairness ...
by manesh on Wed Mar 26, 2008 08:13 AM PDTSomeone like Shrin Ebadi who works inside Iran has to walk a fine line unless if she wants to become a martyr. You people would like that, wouldn't you? Then you can have another hero to write poems for.
Die inside Iran or be brave far from it?
ramintork
by David ET on Wed Mar 26, 2008 08:02 AM PDTGreat Analogy. Some call that "apologist".
An activist but ...
by ramintork on Wed Mar 26, 2008 04:26 AM PDTShirin Ebadi suprises me every time.
She is active for women's rights but when she talks to the western media she reminds me of that joke where the woman calls the Doctor and says:-
Hello Dr, How are you, How are your children. Oh yes I just called to say hello and say my husband is a little bit DEAD today.
You would think that someone so active would not try to paint a rosy picture everytime, if it is so good why does she bother dedicating her life to something which is only slightly unpleasant?
IranianWoman what are you

Shirin Ebadi words a far from propaganda . She is an activist and fighting for more rights for women.
